Officer Candiate Schools & Opportunities

My eldest son (23) is waiting to hear whether he was accepted into Navy OCS. He had wanted to participate in NROTC at his undergrad college but the nearest ROTC program was over 40 miles away (rural area) and for most of that time, he had no car. This seemed a good path for him. Apparently, he has great scores, passed his phys fit test, etc.

Anyone here have any experience with OCS? I have none and was hoping I could find a forum like this one for questions I have!

Good luck to posters above for Navy OCS.

OCS has traditionally been the route for those who: for whatever reason, couldn't qualify for USNA (married/kids, overage, whatever); figured out halfway through senior year of college they wanted to be a Navy officer (me); couldn't do ROTC for some reason; came from enlisted ranks and had a college degree already; were found and recruited by the Navy for special skills and abilities from colleges where students wouldn't normally think about a career as a Navy officer (me again).

OCS also serves as a control valve. If the Navy needs X number of new ensigns to populate the various Navy officer communities, and A come from USNA, B come from NROTC, C come from other commissioning pipelines including enlisted commissioning programs, OCS class sizes and classes/year are adjusted as needed to fill out the annual "ensign production schedule."
