We are all registered for our Parents weekend badges but would love some ideas of what we could do as a family of 4 on Sunday? We will do whatever our DS wants but since he has no clue what there is to do, it may be kind of nice to have some options worked out. We do plan on going to the City Saturday nite for a big dinner. Any resturant suggestions, and do they take reservations? Also since it is Labor Day weekend would there be any special events going on Sunday and Monday? How could we find out about them?
Is Jones Beach a good option or will it be too crowded? Is there a amusement park near by? I know he will want to sleep in,,, thats a given!

Jones Beach is a good option especially if you don't get to the ocean but, you may want to get their early because chances are it will be crowded. I am hearing talk of the boys not having to be back until Monday and if that is true I would consider going to the NYC on Sunday evening. From what I have heard last year some company's did not get out until late after the football game Saturday. Maybe someone with experience could answer that. Their are some nice places to eat on the North Shore as well. As for and amusement park nothing that local and traffic will be an issue labor day weekend.

I also would vote for a Sunday visit to NYC instead of Sat. night.

Last year, the PC class wasn't dismissed until close to 6. By the time we ran back to the hotel to change for dinner and found the restaurant that was about 30 min. away, we were right on time for our 8:15 reservation for Rothmann's Steakhouse. We purposely made it late so we wouldn't have to rush. By the time we got home, we were all ready to crash. Got a good night sleep and we were up and on our way to an enjoyable day in NYC. We drove to Great Neck and grabbed the LIRR and then checked out Penn Station so DS would know how to make the connection for Amtrak.

Been there, done that. My DS doesn't care for the big city scene and we have already checked out NY twice in his life and doesn't want to do it again so I am in need of suggestions as well.
We found a Smokey Bones 45 min. from the academy and we are staying in that direction anyway that we will probably go eat at but other than that, I don't have any ideas. So . . . . parents that have been there, done that and don't want to do it again (the big city that is) ideas are welcomed.

Please keep in mind this is from a tourist standpoint and not from someone who lives in the area. But please, if any of the Long Islander's or NY Parents can shed light, then please correct me.

If you've not done the NYC tourist scene, then go into town on Sunday...Go away from the Beaches! Most of NYC will be headed in that direction. Hit Little Italy for some good Italian food or make your way to the Carnegie Deli. Bubba Gump’s or Hard Rock is also a favorite of the Mids. Also, hit Canal Street for some shopping. China town is next to Little Italy so if authentic Chinese is what you are looking for, you can't go wrong. One of the many double-decker bus tours will get you around to all the sites in the city. Make a day of it.

Don't make big plans for Saturday night. All your PC is going to want to do is RELAX. A really good meal close to the hotel and a peaceful night is all that he will want. If the hotel has a pool, plan to just relax next to the pool. He will most likely turn in early. Make your family time count on Sunday.

Monday morning, I might suggest one of the many 24 hour Diners would be a great way to start the day and set them back up for what awaits

Besides Jones Beach, Robert Moses State Park is beautiful. If the beach at the height of the day is too much, we often went around 3:00 p.m when most people are leaving Jones Beach. Take a picnic dinner, swim and enjoy the ocean. Your DS/DD will probably just want to sleep on the beach.Then put all your stuff in the car and walk the boardwalk, people watch and get ice cream. The boardwalk is near the Jones Beach pool (which is also nice - it's a salt water pool), so look up the beach # to see where to park. Also, there are several mansion tours not far from KP that are spectacular, especially the Teddy Roosevelt mansion.

I wouldn't worry about planning too much - the kids are exhausted and really just want to chill and eat their favorite foods.

Wolfe, great minds think alike. I just posted up a 'things to do' thread. I'm thinking we could both give thumbs up to Great Neck's Deli on the Green. And we LOVED Little Italy. I ate myself silly all over NY.

Hey...that wasn't a post that was a travel guide....Look out Samantha Brown!

Oh yeah...the Great Neck Deli...is a really good place. *Side note* for the 2014 Parents, if you go to the Deli, look out the front door and to the left. You will see BHT's (Baker Hill Tavern). This is a landmark your PC will be talking about the next four years! Just FYI.

Oh...I agree...you can eat your way from one end of the city to the other. The one thing I forgot was the pastries at Ferrara's...A must in NYC.

Robert Moses is a beautiful beach but, like someone mentioned all of Long Island goes to the beach for the last weekend. I live on Long Island and agree that dinner on the beach is always nice. If anyone likes baseball there is a Yankee game on Sunday not sure if you can get tickets and another option is the LI Ducks. The stadium is about and hour away and tickets cost $11 or something like that. The games are usually a lot of fun. If you like to fish they have charter boats out of Freeport, Point Lookout, and Captree. The diner is a great idea for the day they report back just keep in mind traffic will be bad so give yourself plenty of time. Good Luck!
