I am currently a US Legal Resident and have been living in the US for almost a decade. I am able to apply for my citizenship on February 2011 (when i turn 18).
Does this allow me to meet the citizenship requirement? Thanks You For the info, Bryant |

I have a colleague who went through the citizenship application process. It took him over a year. I believe at the minimum it takes a few months. On top of that some people do get DENIED.
I don't believe "I have applied for the citizenship" satisfies the "citizenship" requirement. I believe they want someone who is actually a citizen at the time of application. Given this, if you are a HS senior trying to get a national scholarship during this current academic year, it's a no go. You may qualify in time for a campus scholarship (if your citizen approval is done super fast, before the beginning of the fall term 2011) but that's still iffy. You may shoot for 2, 3 year campus scholars once you become a citizen. But then again, I may be wrong. You should really call the cadet command to get the right answer. |

For what it's worth,
A friend of my son's went along on a campus tour with us. Super bright kid - from Eastern Europe, speaks Russian, Ukrainian, French and English. (green card) PMS told him that if he was interested, he was almost guaranteed a 4yr scholarship, and that they could expedite his citizenship paperwork. Told him citizenship would be a non-issue. |

The citizenship is a tricky process. It can take a whoel year or a couple months. So if you are trying to go into programs or scholarships that require citizenship, I would say that you have very little chance.

Come to think of it, I'm in the exact same situation. You can apply for a AF scholarship with a Green card and if you do get granted one, you must be a Citizen by fall to utilize the scholarship. But for Navy and Army, you must be Citizen when you apply.
I received a letter from the Army saying I was immediately disqualified because of my Citizenship status. So I assumed the same would apply for AF, but I called my local Det. and he stated the same- that I will be disqualified. 2 weeks later, I receive an e-mail stating my status that I should hurry with my papers that I must hand in. That moment, all hope was restored. Otherwise, you would have to apply for a campus-based scholarship once you're in the school. http://www.fcps.edu/southcountyss/gu...nformation.pdf |
