Default Nomination Process. Confusion over Letter Of Intent VS Actual Nomination Application

My son is a future candidate for both USMA & USAFA, class 2012. He has completed Pre Candidate Files, and has been accepted to USAFA Summer Seminar 2011. We are in the process of alerting all 4 nomination offices. We have been successful in submitting an online interest file to both our Congressman and one Senator. He is on file and will be contacted for further instructions/updated applications soon. Here is my confusion: The VP and the second Senator' s websites are either still w/ last years info or only have the option to fill out the actual FULL SCALE Nomination application. 1. IS A WRITTEN/POSTMARKED "Letter of Intent" necessary to send to these offices that don't have my son's name on file? 2. What is the difference between a "Letter of Intent" and the actual full scale Nomination Application that will be filled out this spring/summer? Thanks for any clarification or input you may have for me!

I've never heard of a Letter of Intent for a nomination. Is that something that your state senators/representative require. There's no "Intent" required. And what do you mean about filling out the nomination application the spring/summer?

Here's how it "Normally" works.

Junior year; from December-Feb/March, you apply for summer seminar.
Junior Year, you also do the pre-candidate questionnaire. (Automatically done if you applied for summer seminar)
June/July after Junior year; the Academy application process opens up. You log in online and start the process.
Most senators/representatives open up their nomination application process upon completion of junior year. (They require you GPA THROUGH your junior year). Their application deadline is usually in the October/November time frame.

So, if your MOCs are mentioning a "Letter of Intent", it must be a LOCAL THING. In which case, you need to call your MOC's office. Our MOCs don't have a "Letter of Intent". You simply apply. And they WON'T LET YOU apply prior to the summer after you Junior Year. If you don't have your final grades from your junior year, our MOCs will throw your application away and inform you to "Resubmit" once you receive your grades. So again; if you have some requirement for a "Letter of Intent", it must be a "Local" requirement.

Thanks. Based upon your post, I think I have old lingo/terms being mixed in with present day. That relieves some pressure.

One of our senators required a letter of intent to apply for a nomination prior to getting the application packet. DS wrote a 1 paragraph letter stating his interest and the packet arrived within a week. For the other MOCs DS downloaded their applications from their respective websites.

All right. What about Vice Presidential? Did your son send in same letter?

No, he filled in the on-line application and submitted it electronically. He then sent letters of recommendation directly to USAFA.

This was the same for my representative. The two senators' applications were just applications online.

I remember writing a letter of intent. It was a pretty generic "I will be applying for a nomination to a service academy etc etc" format from what I remember. I'm pretty sure it's just for your MoC's office to make a file for you and get an idea of who/how many applicants they'll have.

If the VP's and Senator's nomination forms are still from last year, then just wait until they're updated. You have tons of time. It's no big deal.
