on page 12 of the instructions to appointees booklet it states that documents cannot be returned at the very top. they want you to hand carry original documents such as proof of citizenship like birth certificate or passport. also want photo id such as driver's liscense AND your social security card. i don't know if i am missing something here but i am reluctant to let original documents out of my control
![]() what happens to these documents?? do they keep them?

They will give you your birth certificate and passport back. But I would definitely make a copy of them to leave at home, prior to taking the original with you. Just in case something gets lost.

They don't "KEEP" anything personal like that. Once you get your military ID card, you'll find that the military practically never needs another piece of personal information from you ever again. They've got it all. My son got everything back. Matter of fact, I don't think they even took it. Simply looked at it.

You do need the social security card, or some other official document that lists your SSN. It shouldn't actually be taken. Just needed for verification.

ONCE you're "in processed" and all has been done, the documents aren't needed and they'll be returned to you. YOU then can send them home, hang onto them, whatever. It's just that if you send them now...USAFA won't be returning them in the mail. Steve USAFA ALO USAFA '83 |

My sons got all their things back. Twin A promptly misplaced his things and needed all new "originals" to be, um, kept at home. Twin B didn't lose anything and has them nicely stored away... somewhere.

Just want to check, it is either Birth Certificate or Passport. Right, it is not both. I figured that way I will hold on to the Birth Certificate and only send him with the Passport. Thanks.

Correct. Worked for me last year just bringing my passport.
