Default Hypothyoidism

Can anyone tell me if having this condition is going to hurt my chances of getting accepted to the Coast Guard Academy or the Coast Guard? Thanks.

You can count on getting a "Does Not Meet Medical Standard" from DODMERB - in other words, a disqualification that will require a waiver from the academy.

  • D131.90 History of hypothyroidism/uncontrolled by medication

  • D132.10 History of hyperthyroidism

DODMERB deals in black and white - you either meet or you don't meet.

Each individual academy has a degree of altitude where they can grant waivers for any disqualifying condition.

And no one can give you the odds or chances of that waiver.

My advice - don't let the chance of a DQ dissuade you from applying (in other words, don't "self-disqualify) - let THEM make that call.
