I believe they receive their first paycheck about one month in to plebe summer. They will then get paid on the 1st of every month from then on until graduation.

Midcharging items isn't anything special. There is a limit on how much you can charge, and it is ultimately your money as well. At the end of your senior year, you'll get the majority of your "held pay" back. This is the money the academy keeps from you with every paycheck.

One thing to note as well, when you midcharge school books, keep the receipts and file them in your taxes. Those school books can be very expensive, especially if studying engineering.

Your Disbursing Officer is probably correct. They give that speech every year. They label it illegal just like J-walking is illegal, yet people do it regardless.

I may have misspoke earlier....unless the system has dramatically changed from a few years back, you should be able to deduct your books in your taxes if you pay cash. Hundreds of students have done this in the past. A lot of people I know would also take a much cheaper route and buy their books online.

I think the issue with using your mid card to purchase your books is knowing whether the money on the card is yours or not. Because you don't have access to your account information, its hard to track/prove you paid for books with your money. It can be argued both ways. What I do know is, the less you spend on it, the more you'll see come your senior year.

In any case, I doubt the IRS will blink an eye for an education deduction in your taxes. As a midshipman, you probably don't make enough to even get on their radar. Besides they're most likely too busy targeting the tea party in paving the way for Hillary's run!

Deducted from held pay.

For upperclassmen (not plebes), remaining held pay is doled out a couple of times a year, up to $750. During 1/C year, the remaining held pay balance, if any, from the previous three years is distributed with monthly pay. Midcharge too much during plebe year, pay for it firstie year.

Under normal circumstances (i.e. for the average responsible person that locked up his books), it's not possible to midcharge that much. Common practice plebe year is to midcharge school supplies, toiletries, and other random daily necessities, and save cash for things like food.

Your mid will be able to track where his held pay is going each month with MyPay. There will be months where it will disappear or go into the negative, mostly in the fall thanks to winter uniform issue (that big fat overcoat is expensive).
