Softball - Bears Win NEWMAC Regular Season Championship

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/18/09)--Freshman Nicole Black delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as Coast Guard, ranked 22nd in the nation, won its first ever New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title with a 5-4 win over Springfield in the opener before sophomore Amanda Frederick’s two-run homer in the first inning of game two was all the Bears would need to complete the sweep with a 5-1 win.

Coast Guard (32-2, 15-0) extends its school-record winning streak to 28 and won its school record 32nd game of the season.

USA Today - Spring notebook: How Katrina helped Coast Guard softball
By Eddie Timanus, USA TODAY

As Hayley Feindel watched her beloved New Orleans nearly washed away by Hurricane Katrina and saw how hard the U.S. Coast Guard was working to save the city, she knew she wanted to be a part of it.

Feindel, now a freshman on the Coast Guard Academy softball team, has the Bears sailing toward uncharted waters as they seek their first NCAA Division III tournament appearance.

Coast Guard is 32-2 and has won a school-record 28 in a row. Feindel is 26-1 with a 0.85 ERA and is already rewriting the school's record book with 264 strikeouts and 21 wins in a row. The Bears earned the top seed and home field advantage for the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament. They open today against the winner of Springfield (Mass.) and Babson (Mass.), seeking the NEWMAC's automatic berth into an NCAA regional.
