Default Writing Scores on ACT/SAT

I read a post recently indicating that USMA does not consider the writing score on the ACT/SAT in its admission decision. If this is true, then why do they now require it? Any info would be appreciated.

The SAT writing test was only implemented a few years ago. Before deciding on how to best evaluate the scores USMA is collecting data from their applicants. Since some only take the ACT they want those writing scores also.
They will evaluate the scores from candidates and compare them against how well they do in their validations tests and writing classes. This will help them figure out how to use the scores to evaluate candidates who apply for admission.

It also makes the test a whole lot harder (more time) to take, I'm sure that's factored in.

So what then would be considered a good ACT writing score? - Even though the writing score isn't taken into consideration for admission.

10 or higher?

Thanks,

I looked on my s's portal and the ACT writing score is the same as the other subjects, based on a 36 as the high score (he happened to score a 29). The SAT writing score in the portal also lists the 800 scale score (s scored 670) not the 1-12 essay score. I think admissions looks at the whole candidate and unless there is a glaring writing deficiency don't worry.

Ok, thanks Sweettooth,

I guess I was wondering if it was the 1-12 essay score, or if it was the combined english/writing score out of 36.

Do they look at the 1-12 writing score at all? I took the ACT test twice and got 10 both times; not quite sure how that compares to others?

Thanks,

M19
