Foundation Program USNA

Foundation is like NAPS in the sense of complete the program succesfully, stay out of trouble, pass the PRT, stay healthy and your chances of an appointment are 99% at the end of the program. So I would say the chances of an appointment are higher from Foundation than they are from NROTC.

Just got accepted into Foundation Program at USNA. Pretty bummed, but it's ok. Is anyone else doing Foundation? And what kind of schools are there? Are the kids high schoolers, or college kids?
DO NOT BE BUMMED!!! THIS IS A GOLDEN TICKET! Here at my foundation school, I have 4 really close friends who are all naval academy foundation preps and have done incredibly well in every aspect. From academics, physical fitness, as well as familiarizing to the militsry life that you will be exposed to at USNA!

Thanks for the reply but sorry my questions are not answered
... so I am not tracking your concepts. Those Scholarships Foundation recipients, about 40+ per year, are now individually tracked by the retired Captain/06 and his assistant in Foundation. They don't need to reapply in USNA. The Captain will issue a standing order: don't get in trouble, avoid Cs, apply for all nomination sources, submit a photo-bio, stay healthy, and pass the fitness test.

... Class of 2028?

that’s good! What school is it if i may ask?

Good morning,
For clarification, if our son was offered a Foundation Scholarship, does this mean that he is no longer a candidate to receive an appointment to USNA this cycle? From reading the threads here, I see that it's still a great opportunity. He was also selected for a NROTC Scholarship to ERAU. We want to understand his options to help support him in making an informed decision. Thanks!

yeah it basically means you're no longer a candidate for the incoming class

... A USNA admissions officer will contact you with an offer for Foundation Scholarship. The offer means that USNA wants your son for some reason but could use some Calculus-Chemistry-Physics review to ensure success in the yard.

how is the experience at a military prep school? Im trying to decide which prep program to go to
It is truly worth it. There is adjusting to the corps at NMMI, there are other foundation schools that do not have a military life style to live by. But at the end, I feel NMMI so far as gotten me exposed to the life at the academy. From making your bed at 0600 to formations etc. Currently take Calc, chemistry, physics and English, all course I currently excel in. Embrace the suck, it sucks being here as it is an extra year… however the extra year you take regardless of where you go is the time to truly improve and go from a 17YO boy to a 19 YO man.

It’s all personal preference, if you want the military life style… I say choose a military school. Personally I believe that the military prep has excelled me physically, mentally, and academically!

Thank you. It also shows on his portal now "Foundation-Extended Offered". Tough choices! How would this opportunity compare with spending a year at ERAU NROTC and reapplying to USNA?

A foundation/prep offer is a saved spot in the next incoming class for your son. Unless he doesn’t meet his obligations (PRT, grades, no honor violations, etc).

NROTC requires reapplication. It’s not a held spot for the next class. Yes, a reapplicant from NROTC may do very well and receive an appointment. But a prep spot is sponsored by USNA specifically to join the next class. They are investing in your child bc they want them. But they need a little help to best succeed once at USNA. They said ‘do this first’. They didn’t say NO (which is the other option).

If he wants usna, the prep offer is the way to go. Hands down.

thats what im deciding on. Im deciding on whether to do Nrotc or foundation
I would advise mine to look at it this way:

Decide between NROTC and USNA. And if it’s USNA you want? You have your offer. Via your prep offer.

There is no guarantee that NROTC will get you to USNA. There is almost a 100pct guarantee that prep will result in an appointment.

Good luck to all discerning this path! But I would highly advise mine to not discredit a prep offer. They are actually investing MORE in you to get you in the class. That’s pretty flattering and something to be proud of, imo.

I guess it's been hard for me to accept the fact that I'll have to wait another year. But I think it'll do me well, since I did struggle in my STEM classes.

I don't know 1/100th of what some of the folks on here know, but I do know this. DS goes to a SAP school with a LOT of sponsored students. He, as I've mentioned is not, he is self-prep. If you can, avoid looking at it as, "waiting" but rather "preparing" yourself for what lies ahead. Obviously the Academy sees something in you, but they want to see more. They've held a place for you to achieve that. You could have received a "turn down". Then what would you be saying, or more importantly, doing? Sometimes the answer is no, yes, or not right now. You received a "not right now". If you pursue a SAP school, you will have enough to keep you busy getting ready and the time will go by fast. In the end, you will be in a much better place when that time comes.

Someone once said to me when I started college, "How old will be if you don't?" If it all goes to plan, this time next year you could have your appointment. If you work the plan, the plan will work for you. Good luck

He wants to fly. Truly, I think the ERAU offer is enticing because he can keep up some flight time alongside his studies. But, he's had his heart on Naval Aviation for as long as we can remember. USNA was his primary focus until recently (with the understanding that there are no guarantees that he'd be selected for that path either way.) We noticed after the Foundation offer that MMI has some flight training opportunities, so that's a neat consideration too. I have attempted to stay neutral and just advise based on the wisdom posted here. He thankfully has some mentors he's gained along the way, but it really is a tough decision nonetheless. Thanks so much for your help everyone!
