Tax Returns

Cadets file state taxes in their home state of record. They have been having state income taxes deducted for, and paid to, their home state. There is no need to file a Colorado tax return (unless they are a resident of Colorado). I am not sure about local tax matters because we have no local income taxes here.

Might want to double check. My state taxes were not deducted automatically.

I am worried about what to do about local taxes. I haven't seen his W2 yet. Does the Academy provide guidance to the cadets in this matter?

The Academy has a “free” service for tax preparation for the Cadets. I think it is in Arnold Hall. I have to believe it is pretty simple and they should have all the answers, deductions, state taxes etc.

tip for vullnoid -
Active duty military residents in PA do not have to pay PA income tax. All your son needs to do is mail in a copy of his orders with his tax return and any PA tax withheld will be refunded.

Do cadets have orders?

if he doesn't have any official orders then he can submit a letter from his TAC officer (Commanding officer) or other documentaion that he is a cadet.
it is in the PA income tax instructions.
