I've been hearing a lot about 3 q'd candidates that have congressional noms not getting accepted into USNA (about 550 a year give or take?), but what I want to know is how many of these fully qualifed people that get rejected will be offered NAPS?

We were told once you are determined scholastically qualified you are no longer a NAPS candidate. NAPS does not require a nomination.

hmm that's interesting, who told you that? I ask because I was scholastically qualified (1300 on SAT) yet I was still offered a NAPS appt. The reason they said they are sending me to NAPS is because I haven't played on a competitive team sport...

PLEASE tell me you are NOT serious???

I have to admit that this is the first time I've heard this. Not saying it isn't true, just that it's a first for me.

I would note that a 1300 SAT alone does not mean you are academically qualified. In fact, a major reason candidates are offered NAPS/Foundation is the combination of high grades/low SATs or low grades/high SATs. Not saying this is your situation, only that it's a common reason to send people to prep school.

Did you receive a letter from USNA telling you that you are "Scholastically Qualified"?

I have never received a 'Scholastically Qualified' letter. What I meant was that my grades have been very strong and I got a 620 on Math and a 690 on CR so compared to the 2013 profile those scores would typically have put me in the middle 50% of USNA plebes.

I have been home-schooled and have taken a majority of my classes at a community college (Ill graduate HS with my AA degree) so while SAT's aren't everything, my grades have been mostly A's and a few B's and the classes I have taken are what the Academy requires/prefers ie. Chem,Calc, etc...

My admissions counselor did ask me to provide extra paperwork and explain the whole community college situation, so that may have been a factor in the NAPS appt.?? I really can't say though.

OTOH, my sports participation has been lacking, and my CFA scores were not excellent. I'll quote what my letter said: "We did, however note your limited participation in competitive athletics and/or physical activities relative to you potential classmates."

This led me to believe that sports/PT was the main reason for decision.(Seeing as they mentioned nothing about academics in the letter)

I tell you all of this so you will better be able to understand my situation. I hope this helps.

Yes, it does help...but you are not truly "scholastically" qualified until the Naval Academy deems you so, some have gotten letters stating they were (son got 2?!) You MUST be scholastically qualified with a nomination, and found to be medically and physically qualified to compete for an appointment to the Naval Academy. Best wishes to you, and CONGRATS on your admiitance to NAPS!! What a bright future you will have!!

I think there was some confusion (at least I was confused  ) due to the question that was asked about being triple qualified and getting a NAPS spot. Since you weren't SQ (which is more than academics) then you are eligible for NAPS.

I am guessing that once a candidate is deemed SQ, NAPS is off the table for that candidate. I could be (of course) wrong, and there are probably exceptions to every rule.

Congratulations on NAPS, Katrina!

I don't know anyonewho has received a letter about scholastic qualifications.

I thought a letter was only sent if you weren't qual'd in scholastics and CFA.

Maybe I'm wrong about that letters deal.

Anyone have the straight scoop for the 2014 class?

Thanks.

My son recieved a letter from USNA indicating that he was "scholastically qualified." The letter came in February.

My son received 2 scholastically qualified letters, one in October, one in December...think he got 2 due to updates he added to his app...

If i finished my application on Nov 18 and have never heard one word about anything from USNA since, am i waiting for a TWE or do i still have a shot at NAPS?

ditto

DS slso received 2 "scholastically qualified letters" - one in mid-October '09and one in mid-November '09. Identical wording in both except for the date by which info. could be submitted to update the file. The earlier letter said "no later than March 1, 2009" and the 2nd ltr. said, "no later than March 1, 2010." For DS anyway, I think the second letter was a corrected version of the first, but I like harmi's reason b/c that means that someone somewhere reviewed the file at least enough to add to it and then something tangible was generated from it! That's always good, yes? At any rate, the young men and women who still wait...hold your heads up high...to have come this far, no matter the outcome, takes strength and commitment and honor beyond your years!

My daughter is going to NAPS and she's triple qualified. She received an SQ letter from the academy.

I'm curious...which did she get first, NAPS or the SQ letter? I have seen others on this board in the past say that it's possible to get NAPS, and then later get an Appointment.
