How did the Service Academy know where I was from?

Greetings everyone,

Just an honest question: How did USMA know exactly where I was from, when I never told them which congressional district or state I was from? I lived overseas for most of my life, and don't see how they could have traced my home of record or residency? I have a Virginian social security number, but thats just about it. Anyone know?

Have they told you that you are a resident of the wrong state?

If you are a dependent of a military member, then you can live in Virginia, but be a legal resident of another state. Your residency is all determined by your parents. What state they put on the 1040 with the IRS is what most colleges use to determine residency.

It is not your home of record that matters.

Read 1984 by George Orwell. (just kidding)

How did you complete the preliminary application without clicking on your state of residency and congressional district?

See that was my first guess... I checked the usma online questionnaire again, and I don't see anything that asks for your congressional district or residency. I find this very disturbing. Or am I wrong?

Was so thinking that. Your name and or social is all they need. Its not just your local community college your applying to. USMA is a federal agency with ways to find "anything"

Well you must have used your US Passport to travel overseas right? Quick call to Department of State can check that out.
Have you ever claimed residence in jail? the Justice Deparment will let USMA know of that.
Have you ever farmed corn in iowa? Dept. of Agriculture would know.

You see where I'm going with this.

In what context does USNA know exactly where you are from? What did you get from them that makes you ask the question?

Umm... okay.. So this must be because I have a Virginian social security number? My father's home of record is in California, and he pays taxes there as well. I told USMA that I am a resident of California, and one of the admission officers responded by saying "according to your file, you are from Virginia, if this is wrong, you need to change this"

So if USMA has me registered as being from Virginia, am I by law a Virginian according to their legal federal ? OR... is it because... USMA is assuming I"m from Virginia because I was born there and have a VA Social security number?

On my candidate log in, I can change it, but I don't want USMA to throw a book at me. I am a legal resident of CA by the way. I'll check the precandidate questionnaire, but I'm pretty sure they never asked us where we are from.

Okay, so it was just a plain mistake. I was getting alittle worried that maybe I was deceived the whole time.. and that I was really a Virginian resident. I hope it was because of my SSN rather than something I don't know about.

EG, JAM told you to check the on-line application again. Third block, immediately adjacent to your birthdate, is your congressional district. It is a mandatory item. If you filled out the application, you told them where you were a resident.

Now, ask your dad what his LES lists as his permanent residence. If it is Virginia, you are golden. If it is CA, you will have to ask WP to change it. They may ask for proof.

Apparently, we are allowed to change it ourselves through our candidate log in? They instructed me to change it to whatever was necessary... though I haven't attempted in doing it yet. Thanks though USNA69. I know you are seriously stressed out with me, but I really appreciate everyone's interest in helping others.
