The Citadel

Your right, I dont find it funny. Waving the confederate flag should be a crime.

Lighten up, Chip. The War of Yankee Aggression was inevitable. Southerners can understand and be proud of their heritage and still be flag-waving patriots of the US. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Jamzmom's original post. It is a very viable part of the history of our country.

ugh, stupid state lines, all they do is divide the country, not only geographicaly but ideologically.

My son still awaits the Citadel's response on his early decision application.

Chip, Slavery was not the main reason for initiating the Civil War. The North was in a position to pass tariff and trade laws that were extremely unfavorable to the South - economically crippling in fact. People can debate moral issues all day long - but if you touch their money, then they will shoot you with both barrels. The North was not so upset about the slavery issue either. Recall that Congress was admitting new states to the US in a alternating fashion right up to the onset of the conflict. Some have argued that the slavery issue became the moral "highroad" for the North to support their economic position.

For the record, my family lived in Virginia/ West Virginia and had cousins on both sides of the issue. Slavery was and is wrong in any form. I am a damn Yankee because I moved to the south and stayed. My son wants to become a Marine officer in the USMC, serving the entire United States of America. He seems to think the Citadel is his best route for achieving that goal.

ObsessiveDad with all due respect please do not give me a history lesson on the civil war. I'm very aware of its causes. Regardless of how the south justified their actions its still treason, and the confederate flag is a symbol of that treason which overshadows whatever good it may symbolize. Im sure it would not be tolerated if an old German man flew the nazi flag outside his house because of the pride he feels in his german heritage. Same principle applies.

Uhhhh....staying out of this one other than to say "Confederates in the Attic" is a pretty interesting book. I think it was recommended to me on a thread disturbingly similar to this one.

Chip, you seem to associate the history of our country and noble men on both sides who gave their life for a cause with modern day rallying (hiding) behind the stars and bars. They are two entirely different situations. I would think that you should be able to recognize the difference.

First - Chip - your views are held my most kids like you were brought up in the NorthEast. Not sure why it is but most/many "Yankees" (myself included) have a "holier than thou" view of the South and Southerners.
I am willing to bet that US History is not taught the same way in Long Island as it is in Charleston. So, you are a product of your environment. My advice - never stop learning and always seek both sides of the story.

Some say the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism or treason. It would not be culturally acceptable to fly it in Long Island - but some southerners see it as a symbol of their determination to rise from the economic ruin from a Civil War that tore apart and left families destitute.
I would never, ever compare it to flying a Nazi flag.

Wait until you get to Northern Vermont and see the good folks in the Northeast Kingdom flying the Canadian flag. Yep - brush up on your French and watch out for Canadian quarters.

Update:

My son was academically accepted to the Citadel for the Fall of 2008. We are very excited. He still has to go through his physical and send final transcripts but feels like the hard part is behind him.

Any tidbits of advice you all have will be genuinely appreciated.

ObsessiveDad let me be one of the firsts to offer you congrats for your son's accomplishment.

My daughter (navy_clarinet) was academically accepted around this time last year to The Citadel as well. She was also offered, or rather told, to come to a specific pre-knob visit for Scholars scholarship interviews. We made the last minute arrangements and attended. Thanksgiving weekend was something to be thankful for in our house as she was offered a full academic scholarship based upon her academic record and her performance in an interview that particular visit. To make a very long story short, she ultimately turned down the scholarship offer as she was accepted and is currently almost finished with Indoc at the Naval Academy Prep School.

She did make some great friends while at her pre-knob visit and still keeps in tough with them almost a year later.

If The Citadel is his first choice, keep him healthy and be thankful that you have that in your pocket and the worries about where he is going to go are over. If he is still trying for a Service Academy, this is a great Plan B to ahve in your back pocket. Just like with the Service Academies, get all the paperwork in as soon as you can.

If you want to PM me, I can give you more info about what you can do now to get some parts of the physical done. Again, congrats!

My son received his letter yesterday and we are happy as well! It's such a great school. Congratulations, Obsessive Dad, and kudos to your son. It's awesome to have an answer before the start of the busy senior year.

We loved The Citadel. We're looking at VMI more seriously, though, because he can play his sport at the Div. 1 level.

It takes unique young men and women to commit to the military school environment. I am optimistic about our country's future because of their dedication.

Again, congratulations to your family.:thumb:

IMO, your math score seem a little low. The SAT national "average" for math is 518, the average for incoming Citadel freshmen is probably much higher.

You may want to take it again.

armydude, you are not going to get much valid help on this forum. Only a very few are extremely familiar with Citadel requirements. However, I think, in my completely uninformed opinion, that Luigi is probably correct. Especially conderning the Browns.

As far as your SAT's go this is from the Citadel's website:

Enrollment in the fall of the 2006-2007 academic year is 2,037 cadets. The Corps of Cadets is comprised of students from forty-eight states and twenty-four foreign countries. The combined average SAT score for first-time, full-time freshmen is 1101

Depending on what math classes you have taken you MAY be ok there. But - take them again- this Saturday???
Coming from out-of-state is often a help since admissions desires a diverse class.
I would be willing to be that you have a better chance being accepted than the Browns have of winning the Superbowl.

If you are serious about this school - get in touch with admissions. Good Luck.

Sorry to break way from the current discussion, but how much partying goes on at the Citadel? Is it really strict with with no down time among the cadets? If there is, where is it usually held, and how big are they?

Thanks

Lurp, there won't be time for much "partying". The first year, called Knob year, is spent just trying to keep alive both academically & physically. When the Cadets have any time to go out, they usually hang out in Charleston and they are in uniform. This is a military college that holds many challenges. The weak get weeded out pretty quickly. Only the fully committed make it through. Not saying that there won't be some fun times, just that anyone going in should do the pre-knob visit & fully understand what life is like there. Beautiful place and some great leadership there. You'll have to decide if its a good fit for you. Good luck to you with whatever path you choose for your future.
