We just got notification from NROTC that DS was not selected for a scholarship. I can't even imagine how that happened, unless it means that USNA and NROTC really do talk to each other and an appointment is on the way. I'm hoping and praying for that!

Any of you who have received appointments already...did you also have RNOTC scholarships offered?

My son got word today he didn't get a NROTC scholarship, but he was also applying for one in Tier 3, which he understood were more difficult to get and there weren't that many offered. Still waiting on the Academy. He's been accepted to UC Berkeley and UCLA, and will do NROTC without scholarship, as his backup plan.
 
I've never heard that ROTC and USNA coordinate on offers of appointment/scholarship. It is almost impossible to get an ROTC scholarship with a Tier 3 major. They told us ROTC was only available to STEM majors. I can't say there aren't any exceptions . . . only know what USNA is saying.
 
I've been accepted to the UCs and USC and I have an appointment but till today my status on the NROTC website has been showing as "no decision has been made."

I was wondering if we here in the west were being forgotten. DS got the same letter today. I saw the envelope and just about swallowed my tongue. All that I say was the thin, white envelope. I was almost afraid to look at the letter inside. Well here is to hoping for the big one. Good luck!

You mentioned NROTC communicating with USNA? Does this happen?
Does anyone know?
 
I have an appointment, but I heard a few days ago that I have been turned down for a NROTC scholarship. This process is full of mysteries.

I received my appointment back in the beginning of October, but I have still yet to hear from NRTOC. I just checked the website and it says that no decision has been made on your application. So there is still hope to all! I really dont think there is any connection between the two. Good luck to everyone still waiting. I cant imagine the anxiety you guys are feeling. I will be hoping and praying for all!
 
3 Q'd and 3 noms. All 3 MOCs have not had a nominated candidate receive an appointment at this time. NROTC interview and BGO interview were very uplifting as I was given the impression (wink, wink) that looking at the "whole person", I should expect to get NROTC or USNA and they would be surprised if I did not. Both my plan B schools have openings still available for NROTC and I'm accepted in both schools' College of Engineering. My NROTC status changed this week indicating that I did not receive a NROTC scholarship. Mixed feelings. Too many people on this site that have received both NROTC and an appointment to think my NROTC scholarship denial is a good thing, but I WILL be optimistic.

I've never heard that USNA and NROTC coordinate in any way. They're trying (not too successfully yet) to integrate the admissions processes more fully so as to save candidates from duplicating "paperwork." However, from what I know, acceptance or rejection for each program is entirely independent.

I had to look this up on NROTC to figure out where we were. DS was a Tier 1 major...engineering. ACT scores are way above listed guidelines, 3.96 GPA, taking AP Calculous with an A, 2 varsity sports, football team captain...blah, blah, blah...all the same stuff that so many here have. I guess the only thing to do should an appointment NOT come is to contact NROTC and the Academy to find out WHY. We are certainly scratching our heads though...

This thread is very interesting...our dear friends decided to encourage their son to apply to USNA , Airforce and ROTC, only after watching my daughter go through the process this year. Before this year they felt he would not have a chance, but now they see how crazy random it all is...
 
I have several candidates whom I assumed would be shoe-ins for appointments this year, based on prior years. One has been turned down, another wait-listed. The others haven't heard. Absolutely incredibly qualified from a statistics and personal standpoint.

I'm also scratching my head b/c I have no idea how to advise kids going forward on what they need to do.:rolleyes:

I know what you mean USNA1985---my son's BGO...is a great guy...VERY helpful (and patient with me..LOL!!) and he is stumped as well...:confused:
 
From all accounts, the Ivies and little Ivies and (top 20 -30 civilian colleges) are having the same issues -- largest applicant pool ever with the baby boom echo, coupled with weak endowments and greater financial aid needs. The college pros are all mystified.
 
We are all just raising more amazingly awesome kids then ever before!
Seriously, it is now considered "cool" to get great grades and be involved in the community, I don't think its always been this way. They literally have twice as many qualified candidates then they have room for, I don't envy the board members having to make these decisions.

Oh, back on topic, my son rcvd appointment in October (If it weren't for his Presidential Nom, he may still be waiting today) and was awarded NROTC scholly in January, so I don' think there was much communicating going on to ensure no duplication of offers in the early stages, but maybe now, that they realize how many qualified candidates they have, they are changing the way they do things.
 
I can second what mmb5 has said-- the large applicant pool this year has resulted in a lot more qualified people getting turned down. My college counselor said that two years ago I would have easily gotten into Notre Dame, BC, and George Washington; however this year I was waitlisted to all three. My mom called USNA admissions last Friday and had a long conversation with a lady there and said a few years ago I would have walked in the door. That's great to know but it doesn't make me feel any better. In fact it makes me feel worse!! It's just an unfortunate year to be applying to any college in general.
 
At the risk of going too far off topic...I thought it worth sharing the experiences of the candidates and our high school. In a graduating class of 531 four kids are candidates for the Naval Academy. One was offered and accepted NAPS in early fall (outstanding athlete), another needed several medical waivers (football player), he reports being offered NAPS, turning it down, and is now wait listed. He also claims to not have an LOA or nomination so we aren't sure how that works. Another did not receive a nomination, was granted an LOA in Feb. and is reporting he is attending USNA Class of 2014. He plays a unique varsity sport. Lastly, my DD...3Q'd with 2 nominations (alternate for a 3rd nomination), not so patiently waiting... for both USNA and NROTC. The 3 other candidates did not apply to NROTC.
 
Strange to me that the candidate with the LOA but no nom is under the impression he is attending in July--thought a stipulation of LOA was obtaining a nom?
