This is a question for all those on this forum who attended a service academy a long time ago.....

So basically I was wondering, how did you learn about the academies before there was the Internet and level of mass communication we know today? Was it that your parents were in the military or what? I'm very curious

Wow, you make me feel really old, haha. It wasn't that long ago that the internet wasn't around.

I knew about the service academies due to a family tradition of serving in the military and being interested in "military" things. Even with that I only heard about USMMA when I was going to a Congressman's Academy open house to get information about USAFA.

Hmm...let's see...

1. I graduated from Air Academy High School...yes, really.
(dad was the hospital commander at USAFA)
2. Family has served since 1917
a. Grandfather 1917 - 1958
b. Dad 1952 - 1984
3. Wanted to fly the F-100 as a kid, asked next door neighbor how he became F-100 pilot?
a. You should go to a place called the AF Academy
b. Learn to fly at Columbus AFB
c. Learn the F-100 at Luke!

So...I did USAFA, Columbus, and a lot of OTHER places since the F-100 was a flying DRONE when I flew...

Forgot to mention...I still have the catalog I received when I wrote to the academy about "becoming an F-100 pilot..."

It's the 1967-1968 one...pretty ratty now, filled with my notes from 2d grade...I still show it to candidates when I ask "just how serious are you?"
