MDLAX DAD - We feel your pain. Do not let son forget about trying for USMMA next year. DD received TWE last week, but had been accepted to USMMA and thought she was a good fit. She was happy to meet many cadets that intended to go active duty for USCG after graduation.

Here is our D's stats...This had to have been a very competitive year.

Attended AIM
Interviewed and was told she did very well.
PFE 241
GPA 3.86
Class rank top 12% at high school where 97% go on to college
SAT 650M/660E
AFJROTC officer
Varsity athlete since 9th grade
Leader in church youth group and completed mission trips to two foreign countries.
Congressional nomination to USMMA
DODMERB qualified
I read her references and they were stellar. She took the time to ask extra people so she could submit the best.

Told me if she did not have USMMA she would just start again. Of course this was after a few tears. Next week she started working out for indoc and is wearing USMMA clothing all the time. Wish we had bought more USMMA clothing for her. Already sick of same sweatshirt :)

Has your daughter decided to go USMMA at Kings Point?

Your daughter will end up being happy wherever she goes. I was in a similar situation when I applied. I had CGA but really wanted USNA. When i found out I didnt get into USNA I was pretty disappointed but focused on what i had to do for CGA. Almost 3 years later I can't imagine it being any other way.

Of course this was after a few tears. N

Kings Point is a great school, however, if she had her heart set on USCGA she might want to consider reapplying to USCGA after showing what grades she can make at USMMA. It would mean an extra year of school but has been done before.

Be careful what you ask for !

Waste tax payer's money on some kids ego trip:thumbdown:. If she wants CGA good.:thumb: Go self prep at a CC. Take a spot from some kid that intends to complete the program. Is self serving in my opinion. There are easier ways to get into CGA than doing plebe year at KP. USMMA has crushed alot of peoples dreams that used it for reason like that.

I doubt very much if a plebe from KP would want to transfer to CG. You say it has been done before? After a year at KP, most want to stay. A third classman from KP is thinking Sea Year! A career and commission as a Coast Guard officer is always an option to a KP graduate. Best wishes for a bright and prosperous future, and may you throw many coins in Amphitrite's Pool!

You'd be surprised. Every year I hear of USCGA applications submitted with a return address of Kings Point.

Not sure how many actually receive appointments, though.

Luigi is correct that every year we seem to have an application or two from Kings Point Midshipmen, but it's rare that they actually earn an appointment to USCGA. Once they've started at USMMA, or any other service academy, we believe they should honor that commitment and complete the program...they can always get a Coast Guard commission after graduation from Kings Point. Attending community college or a full-time college/university is a much better plan if you're interested in reapplying.

Agree w Objee!

Our son was set on reapplying to USCGA & he chose SUNY Maritime...we can see USMMA (the ship at least) across the water! I think his choice has matured him over the past year and hopefully USCGA has seen that in his reapp...One never knows!

KP to CG

I guess anything is possible. A lot leave after indoc, uncertain of their future. I know I had a plebe come in from West Point to Kings Point. It just seemed like a long shot, especially with the rivalry between schools. But we do draw from much the same pool of talented young men and women with an interest in the sea. I have one upstairs right now, who chose Coast Guard over KP!

KP Commissions

All graduates have the opportunity to receive Active Duty Commissions in any service branch. Several of my classmates went active duty Coast Guard, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. Best wishes!
