So what exactly is the Remarks or Additional Comments: (Limited to 2000 Characters) box for on the preliminary app? Is that for things such as Eagle Scout, character awards, leadership camps and such?

Also, if you applied to NASS, but haven't heard back affirmative or negative yet, does that take the place of the prelim. app.?

yes, I remember reading something saying to not send in a prelim app if you applied for NASS.

Yes, applying to NASS will take care of the preliminary application. My son applied to NASS (on the coaches request) as a way to start the application process.

Remarks: NEVER leave this blank. I can't remember exactly where it was on NASS application or what part it pertains to. But, generally speaking, NEVER leave it blank. If there is a remarks section following a listing of say your sports activities in high school, well, then write something about how you played soccer since you could walk, played summer traveling league BB, etc. Give further detail about something in the section that the remarks or "other" area is with. More details about that club you were president of: maybe how many members, a big community service project you did, describe your hands on leadership, etc.

If one is accepted to NASS, does that mean they become an Official Candidate since the NASS app. is substituted for the prelim. app?

If you were denied NASS, do you need to do the preliminary application though? I didn't receive a candidate number for USNA in the TWE today, but I don't want to open '2 files' on myself by accident...

NASS app serves as the pre-candidate application. They can decide if you're competitive or not competitive enough to continue from the NASS app as they could from the regular pre-candidate application. So don't worry about it!

Not being accepted to NASS does NOT necessarily mean you are not going to be deemed competitive for admissions! You could still get the candidate letter even if you were denied NASS!
