Hello everyone. I was exploring the NROTC website and saw that the Navy will give out 85% of the scholarship funds to technical majors only. However, the Marine Corps informational page did not state the same preference for tehnical majors. Does the Marine Corps prefer technical majors, or can an applicant select a non-technical major and still have an equal shot at getting the scholarship than a non-technical major? Thanks.

USMC Scholarships v. Academic Majors

One Data point: our S has received a 4 yr USMC (NROTC) and will be studying Agronomy and Soil Science. Tons of Chem/ Bio/ Math but not engineering. We were told be 2 Commissioned officers during the process that USMC cared not about major, only that a Bachelors degree was being enolled in.

This is an interesting question we still have AFTER being awarded the scholarship. DS chose an Engineering Tier 2 major in his MC Option application with the (mistaken) belief that the same requirements for selection applied to the MC Option as the Navy Option. Although he excels at math and science, he would much prefer a business or Earth Science major....we are waiting for the "dust to settle" and contact from the school unit and will pose the question about changing the major. Even though there is a lot of information out there indicating the Marine Corps doesn't really care what your major is (as long as its "of benefit to the Marine Corps"), not sure how they feel about changing your major from what you listed on your scholarship application. We'll find out!

NROTC: Navy and Marine degree majors

The US Navy is looking to create officers who are capable of running shipboard operations. Ships are filled to the gills with engineering problems of all varieties. This is why 85% of the scholarship money goes to Tier 1 majors; those ending with the word "Engineering" at the end - Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Computer, Aeronautical, and Aerospace. Majoring in the American or European novel will not help you solve a plumbing, hull, or circuit problem that threatens the life of the ship and crew.

The US Marine Corps is creating officers for ground combat leadership roles and will "teach" those that make it through OCS all the skills they will need to be successful in those billets. Being an electrical engineering major will not make you a better platoon commander leading an infantry outfit and the EE skills won't help you be a better rifle shot or rapple out of an Osprey. So the Marine Corps really doesn't care what you take your degree in - English Lit, Art History, or Quantum Mechanics so long as you have a 4 year degree.
