My mother and I are staying at the Super 8 motel in Newburgh.

About how far is this hotel from the school and how long would you estimate it would take to get up there by cab?

I don't know the area and any help will be extremely helpful.

I just checked Mapquest and it showed about 1/2 hour for travel. We live near WP and have traveled from near your hotel to the front gate near the Thayer in about that time frame. Re: cabs. . .We stopped for fuel in the center of Newburgh a couple of weeks ago; and despite it being a small town, during that time (6-ish Sunday evening) I counted 8 cabs either in the station or within eyesight so there are definitely cabs there. Our boy has a 6:30 report time and I know we'll leave by 5-5:15 just to be certain nothing happens (e.g., flat tire, etc.) enroute that will make him late. I'm certain the cabs will "be on high alert" that morning due to high demand but I'd still call early, perhaps the night before and re-confirm that morning. This is one time you really don't want to start out by being tardy! ;o)

If you plan on taking a cab to West Point on the morning of R-day - PLEASE call admissions first and let them know.

Not all cab companies can get on post. If your cab cannot get on post then you will be dropped at Stony Lonesome Gate and have to walk in. Walking in at West Point is not like Annapolis. It is a loonnngggg way.

Our son also has a 6:30 AM report time. I am assuming that means through security, parked and at a specific building by 6:30 AM. Anyone have details yet?

What about the Thayer Gate and the Buffalo Soldier Field shuttle? Does it run that time on "R" Day?

I know they say use the other gate but in this special circumstance?

Bakermiddle: we usually fly into Newburgh. If you are flying in there, I strongly suggest you simply rent a car. For what you will pay for cab fare to WP and back you can rent a car. If you go to www.budget.com, there is an option to prepay...you save about 40% if you do that. It is a very easy drive to WP. We always throw the GPS in a bag and take it with us, but the Newburgh airport has very nice directions printed and hand them out at the car rental places.

Oh, yeah! If at all possible, renting a car for a day is the best way to go. Don't be intimidated about the driving as the whole area is pretty rural or small town at worst. It's not like you're going to be navigating big city traffic at all. The worst part is the traffic lights coming through Newburgh if you use 9W and the streets are a little bumpy from the winter pot holes.

For R-Day they want all New Cadets to go through the Stony Lonesome Gate. I don't know what time the shuttle starts.
Renting a car is really the best way to go. Even if you stay in Highland Falls - go through Stony Lonesome, it's not very far around and it will make entry onto post alot smoother.
If renting a car might be difficult perhaps you can make some contacts through your parent club and go in with another family and split the rent.

I would love to try renting a car, but my mother is against that idea (she is a terrible navigator/driver and I have yet to get my license).

Are there any others who will be staying in Newburgh that have a 6:30 report time?

Here is an option - You should take the travel package and travel up by yourself. Your mother should contact her parent club in Ga - I am sure there are plenty of other families going up for R-Day. Hopefully she can find one to travel with and get a ride in on R-Day.
Relying on cabs around West Point for a weekend like R-Day can be expensive, risky and frustrating.
R-Day is very stressful. To have to worry about a cab arriving at 5:30 am and then dropping you at the gate is stress you don't need.
Good Luck.

Bakermiddle: you need to contact our GA parents club...our president is Lisa Long...she can get your mom some suggestions. Seriously, and I hate Atlanta traffic, Newburgh is far less traffic than Columbus...your mom will be fine. It's so easy to get to West Point from Newburgh.

Roughly speaking, what are the rental car rates in Newburgh for 2 days?

I really appreciate your help so far.

I am assuming you are flying into Stewart field in Newburgh? If so, you can do the car for about 150-170ish...but that was just a quick search. Get a friend who travels to look at this w/ you and your mom. If you are a military family, there might be a better deal going through the travel agent on post. You need to get in touch w/ the GA parents club...there might be another mom and kid traveling that want to share w/ y'all.

are you allowed to go home on weekends? since i live so close and all i was just wondering if i can visit a bit more often then leaves

It depends upon what privileges you have for the weekend. If you have a pass you can be gone overnight on the weekend. If you have OPP's (Off Post Privileges) you can go into NYC for the day but cannot be gone overnight. If you only have walking privileges you are limited to Highland Falls and the immediate vicinity - there are specific boundaries you will be given.

America's Finest - please correct me if I am wrong.

so i would have to ask my sqaud leader to visist overnight on weekends? or like someone up in the ranks

When you go through beast, you will have many briefings. You will learn all the procedures for getting a pass. You will learn what you can do for additional passes. You get 1 per semester, unless you earn extra. You will not have OPPs until yuk year. Plebes cannot really leave Highland Falls...so you won't be running home for day trips your first year...sorry.
