I have noticed on several forums etc that many people recommend bringing extra socks and sock liners. What type of socks and what are sock liners? Also took my daughter to WP to get boots they had to order correct size. They had her try on a pair of "issue" ones for sizing as they didnt have the Bellevilles in her size. The ones she tried on (which she was told would be the type she would be issued on R-day) were uncomfortable and didnt seem to fit well around her heel. My question is... do they get a choice of issued boots on R-day? She would prefer to get ones like she ordered.

I would say to try to buy it before so she can get used to them and make them comfortable before you get there...

We ordered the Belleville 390DES boots.. but was wondering.. will she be issued another pair of boots on R-day? And if so, will she have a choice in which ones? What about socks? What kind of extra socks should we buy? Her feet tend to take a beating in civilian life (narrow foot and a runner)...would like her to put the best foot forward. Just want to help the feet!!! Ohhhh the stories I hear!!!

I have no idea and I dont want to tell you wrong, but I would think that you get to use your boots if they are certified...I would personally put in dr scholes insoles into all of my shoes. and socks? I would say thicker socks, not too thick so that her feet develop some fungus, but not to thin so that they do not get worn out too quick?

But you should wait for someone that is already a cadet, because what I said is just from personal experience and opinion

Thanks for you input. And yes, I will be purchasing Dr Scholls for her also.

From what I've gleaned, you must have two pairs of boots after R-day. I have heard that if you arrive with one pair of boots broken in, they will issue you another pair of "issue boots" which are the uncomfortable kind. You could show up with no boots and receive two pair of issues or arrive with both pair and be issued no boots. In any case, you will be paying for both pair of boots. I plan to arrive with two pair of belleville 390DES because I've broken one pair in and I will have a second pair of boots I feel comfortable in (and I don't care to pay for issue boots that I don't like)

Everyone will get the same type of issued boots. The only input she will have is on the size that feels most comfortable. I honestly don't think the issued pair were bad but then again I might just have gotten used to them.

I brought the standard green socks that are worn with the boots, plain white tube socks, and black dress socks for the low quarters. I also brought a pair of insoles but wished I had brought more than one because you will have barely any time to change let alone switch the insoles from one pair of shoes to another. Make sure to get a larger pair of the issued shoes/boots to make up for the insoles.

It also helps to wear the really thin black nylon socks under your green boot socks to reduce chances of getting blisters and hot spots.

Oh man, thank you...Since we start soccer practices in the beggining of august, I was getting scared of loosing all the skin on my feet again. This has helped me in so many ways...THANK YOU!!!

Do they not issue the 390DES on R day?? So if I was to go out and purchase 2 pairs of boots now, I won't have to get any on R day?

AF, did you buy the socks ahead and time and bring them with you or are you issued them?

No problem! :thumb: Don't forget to use moleskin on hot spots as well before they have a chance to turn into blisters.

I was issued socks but also brought my own because I wasn't sure how good the issued ones would be or if there would be enough.

Were you issued enough socks? Would you recommend buying 1 or 2 pairs of boots ahead of time? And I know I've asked you about the insoles before but exactly what dr. scholls insoles did you use? There are so many out there to choose from.

Sorry for all the questions, but your help is much appriciated! :thumb:

The link is what my daughter was told would be issued... and are the ones she tried on but didnt feel "right" on her foot. We ordered the 390DES and am thinking maybe when we go back to pick them up I may purchase the second pair for her. What socks did you bring and were they better than the ones issued? So sorry for all the questions but really concerned about her feet ....the stories one hears scare this Mom.

OK...I know this must seem like overkill....but Ive got more sock questions. Went to the earlier boot link and looked at socks on that sight....questions galore start arising. Are there socks that are not allowed at beast? What color socks are required? Are there a certain type that are preferred? My daughter would be appalled I am spending so much time contemplating socks.....and yes I am starting to feel a bit foolish.

If you really don't like the issued ones I recommend one pair of what she feels comfortable and the second pair being her academic year boots (the ones that will be the most comfortable but won't be authorized for Beast) unless you don't mind buying 3 pairs total. There were just enough socks but I felt a lot better having the extras since the usage will vary (some will only last a few hours before they are changed due to rain or huge mud puddles). I just grabbed a pair of insoles. I honestly didn't look too hard or remember the specific kind and I don't use them anymore but they did help during Beast. Just get whatever feels comfortable.

The white tube socks were just like the ones issued. The black nylon ones were better than the issued ones (I got the really thin soft ones). The boot socks were the same as the issued ones as well. Here's the link to the boot socks:

Any white tube socks (no logo), black socks (any really although I heavily suggest thin ones), or green tube socks (the shade of green of the link above) are authorized. Basically, just don't get ankle socks.

I dont know if this helps, but when I was at the Edwards Air Force Base AFEES, I purchased some socks designed for combat boots as well as some for the low quarters. They seem in my opinion to be a bit more comfortable than normal socks. I have a question though Americas Finest, the socks i got are tan, will they be allowed?

hey guys sorry for the exta questions but im a little confused. I went to WP about a month ago and got a pair of bellevilles that are certified for beast, and ive spent a good amount of time breaking them in and they feel good, fit etc.. however to my understanding u have to have two pairs of boots. so my question is assuming i got another pair of bellvilles at WP again, would that mean i would not be issued the subpar standard issue boots on R-day?

Way too much worrying going on regarding boots and socks. Boots that are issued are not sub par and will be just fine. Just like running shoes, everyone has a preference, and should be based on fit and need more than anything. Insoles and sock liners do work, but Beast is not the place to try using them for the first time. The best way to deal with blisters is duct tape. Apply tape at the first hint of a hot spot. Anyone who has done a lot of hiking or long distance running will be familiar with the process. Most should be more concerned with wearing the shoes than the boots. Many kids have never worn dress shoes for any length of time. Again, fit is the most important part. As the instructions clearly state, get one pair of boots and shoes as soon as possible. Wear them all the time. God speed.

Go to an outdoor store and buy the very best socks you can. There are several good brands, but be prepared to spend $10-$15 per pair; well worth the money. You can also get sock liners at the same place. They help wick away the moisture; again, a good investment.

I remember one thing my Cadet took was blister band-aids, and they were a Godsend. She was actually allowed to call me once and ask for more and I bought out 2 store, sent about 14 boxes, which she shared. The Band-Aid brand ones are in a silver box with the word "ampules" on it. You might consider stashing a few of them in with soap/toothpaste. If you take them out of the box and put them in a plastic bag they won't take up much room. My Cadet was allowed to keep them, although things may have changed, it's worth a shot.

OK, think I finally got socks under control. Im moving on to underwear. Every website and forum recommend girls bring extra undergarments. Do all undergarments have to be white?
