Just wondering if anyone out there in the forum has in fact received a Marine Option sideload scholarship anywhere? If so, would you be willing to share information here - your stats, your experience? Any specific difficulties you encountered in the process? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! Mom to a USNA TWE holding Marine Officer in the Making - the goal has never changed, just the pathway there:smile:

How about anyone knowing of someone who received the sideload Marine Option? My understanding is that it is pretty difficult to be awarded the Marine Option scholarship as a 4 year applicant and even miore difficult as a sideload applicant. Anybody else get that impression?

Sorry about that MorganC...so many phrases and terms and abbreviations floating around in our house these past few weeks...this one - "sideload" - has become almost as common as "DoDMERB" - at any rate, rather than trust any definition I could cook up, I googled it and it was explained under the FAQ section of Georigia Tech I believe - but I think the explanation is applicable to all schools/NROTC programs. Here it is...

Students can become eligible for
the award of a scholarship by joining their NROTC Unit in the College Program (nonscholarship)
status. After one academic term, the student may be recommended for
scholarship status to the Chief of Naval Education and Training, who is empowered to
award scholarships to promising College Program students. In general, if you can earn
better than a 3.0 GPA in your first academic term, achieve a "B" or better in Calculus, and
demonstrate a high aptitude for Naval Service, you will have a good chance for a
NROTC scholarship. The availability of these “side-load” scholarships is also dependent
on the officer production needs of the Navy and NROTC budget.

I would like some information/statistics on this as well, as my son is also going to be pursing this option at VMI. Marine ROTC instructor there advised us that 90% of his candidates receive Marine option sideloads. I'd like to know how acurate this is.

Side-load

According to some documents I've seen, last year there were LOTS of side-loads - Norwich must've had a total of 12 or 14, VMI 8-10, Citadel 6-8 etc...

Believe them to be more prevalent at the Senior Military Colleges.
