What to bring on I-DAY

Just wondering what we should bring to I-Day. Everything I've recieved has been very undescriptive. So if you could make just a list of things to bring, and things which you'll want right after plebe summer and such, I'd be very appreciative. :shake:

I Day

You will get orders to report that should be specific on what to bring with you prior to I Day. My son was told by the mids during his CVW not to bring anything other than his running shoes that he should wear in and a cell phone that they would hold until such time that he was allowed to make the designated phone calls home. However, someone last year on this board prior to his I Day pointed out that the letter we received would be his very first set of orders and therefore he should follow them exactly, sage advice and thats what he did bring with him on I day. Although he repeated what the mids a CVW said to him, and that is he could have showed up empty handed as USNA provided everything he needed. The one exception is that the letter specified briefs, he did not bring briefs he bought white boxers and was happy that he did.

Congratulations on the appointment.

Page 10 of the Important Information for the Class of 2014 book that was in the Permit to Report package has a detailed list of what will be issued (the # issued is shown). DD's host at her CVW told her that everything issued was sufficient. There is even a note about running shoes and why bringing their own broken in running shoe is advised.

There is even a note about bringing the athletic equipment for any sport the Plebe desires to participate in - my understanding is that at 4pm 5 out of 6 days of the week, they go to their chosen varsity/intramural/club sport for a practice.

 This book was not in the Permit to Report Packet...anybody else concurs?

GO NAVY!

Seriously?? It was definitely in DD's. It is a 15 page full-size, stapled information book with instructions on filling out the paperwork, on I-Day, PPW, about arriving at I-Day "Dentally Healthy" and LOTS more.

I'd call down to Admissions and inquire.

Guess I'll just wait for the permit packet and read through that. Thanks though.

They are not orders. Until they are sworn-in, technically, they are just "candidates." They are not in military service until that time and are not subject to "orders."

That's why they call it a "Permit to Report" ... not "Orders to Report."

As I've said before, you don't even have to show up if you don't want and there's not a thing they can do about it. What are they going to do, Court Martial the candidates? Or, arrest them for being "Absent without Leave"?

Nonetheless, it is good advice to do as you've been instructed. Nobody gets into trouble for bringing something they were not supposed to bring on I-Day. They will simply confiscate it. Simple! No fuss.

If you search this board, you'll see several threads on this subject. Times have changed since my day but the general consensus seems to be:

(1) Bring one pair of worn-in running shoes
(2) Bring a cell phone - if you don't have one/can't afford one, USNA will provide you one (they take it away but return it for approved calls)
(3) Women, bring 6-7 sports bras, cotton, white

Other than that, they may or may not let you keep what you bring, even if it's on the approved list. If it's heavy, you may end up carting it around for awhile before they take it away.:shake:

There is a large MidStore that has toiletries, clothing, cleaning supplies, ad nauseum. Worst case, if there's something you need that's not at the MidStore, your family can send it to you -- you'll have it in a day or two.

And I've never heard of anyone being berated for NOT bringing something on the list. The main reason is that maybe someone couldn't afford some of the items, literally, and embarrassing them in that way would not be good. When you're in the military, the military provides all that you need. Maybe not all you want, but all you need.

As my wife chimed in saying, females bring solid white cotton underwear that are comfortable for you.

you're given granny panties! you HAVE to wear the bras and underwear that they issue you for plebe summer. at least that's what my company made us do. they let us store the clothes we brought in the bike room until the end of plebe summer. during the ac year, we can wear whatever undergarments we want basically. females, i DEFINITELY recommend that you go to victoria's secret during parents' weekend. and also, females, pm if you have more personal questions about the academy, plebe summer, ac year, etc. it always helps to have a one-on-one private convo with a female mid or officer.

good luck.

My son's company didn't care about the underwear ... and wanted you to wear what worked (within reason!) of course he wore the long-line knit boxers. I will suggest Gold Bond or other powder to help absorb sweat and such ... plebe summer is hot, humid and exhausting ... you don't need rashes too

Gold Bond probably helps but I don't recall it being used in my day and we all survived. And we didn't have A/C!

Hey coming from class 2013,

On i-day they gave us everything I needed from socks, underwear, undershirts, and all that stuff. They even give you body wash, shampoo, loofah, toothpaste, 2 toothbrushes, etc. I know during my plebe summer I brought all the stuff they told me to bring (ended up being like 100$ worth) and didnt use any of it during plebe summer. I had to leave it in my duffle bag which was locked up in a storage room which also had my cell phone and clothes I wore on that day. You get your phone back for your three phone calls but other than that, you will most likely never see the stuff you brought until plebe summer's over.

However, because they told you to bring that stuff I would bring maybe half of it just because they said to. KEEP THE RECEIPT AND DONT OPEN THE STUFF (unless you actually plan on wearing that stuff.. even though there's no point because they give you all the clothes they tell you to bring) I luckily found the receipt and returned pretty much everything and got all that money back.

You might want to send some Body Glide in the first Care Package. It can be found at most stores catering to runners and many sporting goods stores. It can also be used on the feet to prevent blisters. If you are not used to the high humidity and heat of Annapolis it will be a lifesaver.

A question I have regarding sports aids (bodyglide, foot powder, etc), should this be something we send in a care package, or will the powers-that-be allow the plebes to keep this if they bring it with them?

BTW, Bodyglide is also sold on Amazon.

Oh, what about sunscreen? Does the academy supply that? Hubby just diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma...wouldn't want DS to have to face that in 20 years.

My son's PRP doesn't have this booklet either, is your DD 2014 or is she already a Plebe? I'm worried my son's is missing something.

Bodyglide, Body Powders, watch, and other things may be taken and stored or allowed through. Who knows? Really depends on Cadre. Make sure the first Care Package has all the stuff they will absolutely need. They will be able to tell you what was taken and what they still have at the end of I-Day after the swearing in when you meet them on Stribling Walk. Some Cadre at I-Day have some problems with everything brought in others can let it slide as "no big deal". As with everything in the military sometimes it doesn't make sense but go with the flow. I highly recommend the Body Glide. My Daughter had never heard of it but I got it for her and she used it through Plebe Summer and for the past three years to prevent blisters and chafing. She swears by it. She will, by the way, be second session Cadre for your Plebes after she comes back from Quantico. Pity the Plebes she gets.:thumb: Just kidding she is a pushover. Yeah right. I assume that they will get sunscreen. Check with admissions. Your sunscreen may be your Plebe's white works.
