Wow, how come no one has already posted something about this historic day in Corps history?

27 April, 1805, Battle of Derne -- Lt Presley O'Bannon, under the command of General Eaton, leads a detachment of 10 marines and 400 - 500 mercenaries in the attack and capture of the Port City of Derne in the coastal nation of Tripoli. Our nation's first land battle on foreign soil (outside of Canada).

And a 200+ year tradition of fierceless and unwavering courage by the proud men (and later women) of the US Marine Corps in the face of battle on foreign shores is born. And the rest of the world still trembles at their battle calls to this day. Ooh-rahhh...

I learned about that in Parris Island back 30 years ago, they weren't even teaching that in schools, do you actually think kids of today know about that! lol
