Can anyone give me a ballpark on how much they will make monthly after everything is deducted for each year?

Thanks in advance.

BALLPARK!!!

They will be make approximately $950 a month before taxes. HOWEVER, they have a debt to pay back uniforms, laptops, etc... So, for the first year, they will be making about $150 a month after taxes and debt. Each semester, that number goes up. My son is in his 2nd year. (C3C). As of this semester, he is making full pay; minus taxes. He didn't use magic money for anything except the mandatory stuff like the laptop. So he didn't have as much to pay back. I think that's why he's paid off early. Normally, by the end of their 2nd year, they will be up to full pay. Which is around $800 after taxes. That's the ball park. mike....

Our current C4C has been paid a range of $128 to $580; some months have more uniform issue than other months. He didn't use any magic money for his books - only has had the laptop & uniforms taken out. We told him in the beginning not to expect more than $100 a month, so he's very happy when he finds out it's more than that. At this point most of the big expense uniform items are purchased so he figures his pay will even out for awhile at $200-250.

Magic money is basically an advance of pay used to purchase the laptop & uniforms. In year's past the cadets also used the magic money to purchase their books. This year they limited the use of magic money to first semester books only for the new C4C's, but you didn't have to use it to buy your books. Our son found used books online at Amazon, B&N, and from upperclassmen which were much cheaper than those in the C-Store (cadet store).

Out of curiosity, and maybe this has been discussed already (if so can someone direct me to a thread?)...if one were to recieve a few side scholarships from writing an essay, etc. can they apply this scholarship money to uniform, books, and computer...and then not get the pay docked from the monthly check?

Yes, they can. How it works is that the amount of the cadet loan will still be the same, but the scholarship money will be used to pay it down more quickly. The scholarship check will get turned over to USAFA, and then the money will be put toward your cadet's loan balance. The loan will then be paid off earlier, and the cadet will begin getting their full pay earlier. Make sure that your scholarship rules allow the money to be used for these things other than tuition, room, and board.

I've made from $59-580. I'll be bringing in $499 at the end of the week for April. As was mentioned earlier, it all depends on months when you must go pick up and buy issue items.

There will be plenty of deductions from the Govt, long before USAFA-required items come out, too.

This estimate will be close.

960.00 - gross
-60.00 - SS/FICA
-13.92 - Medicare
-40.00 - State/local taxes (avg est)
-25.00 - SGLI
-65.00 - Federal withholding
$756.08 - Net

BALLPARK - ymmv.

I haven't made below $200 since being here. The most I've made in a month was around $700. This month I got $508.00. (freshman)

Recently the pay was switched around. The freshmen actually get around 400-500 a month now except for exception months where we had to gather alot of issued items which will be deducted from out total.

Can you please explain this?

Thanks.

I would like to add that I was paid $0 for two months in a row, so there are months where mandatory uniform issue items will severely impact pay.

I think what changed was the withheld pay. It used to be that a significant portion of pay was withheld in the form of "magic money" but now cadets get that money in their accounts and are expected to budget on their own. I don't know all the details, but I got around 170-200 freshman year, and 400-600 this year. Now I am getting over 700

Just to show how things have changed...

Ronald Reagan took office, I remember the big jump in my pay those years.

Oh lord; let's not talk about the days when we were "Po". I remember my first "Stereo" system in the military. It was an RCA AM/FM Clock radio. That's it. There were no CD's, no such thing as DVD's, no such thing as Cable TV or Satellite, Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet, no video games yet, no video rental stores, etc... The first car I could afford after school at my first base was a 1965 Voilkswagon Beetle. (Actually really liked that car). I was looking at my Social Security Benefits statement the government sends you yearly saying how much you'll get (Assuming social security is still there). It shows your annual income for all the years you worked. The year I got married, got promoted, and living off base, I made just shy of $10,000 a year.

And yes, we walked to school, in the snow, up-hill, both ways. LOL!!!! Mike.
