Well, the story begins with my dad's friend son, who is graduating this year with a sea going job working 1 month on/off. I would love have that! I was wondering would it be possible to get picked up by an air national guard/air force reserve flight squadron, and both be a merchant marine and an aviator in your off-time? Do graduates even have a chance to obtain an air national guard/air force reserve pilot slot? Thank you.

<---Gets the popcorn ready. I'll post something more substantial later when I get some time unless someone beats me to it.

the quick and dirty to your question is ABSOLUTELY.
i know several guys that have graduated here and are in the Air National Guard and sail on their licenses. it is a perfectly adequate way of fulfilling your obligation. you can talk to the AF officer here on campus once you show up any the best way of setting up something that works for you.

Can you give some expanded info on this Is2day? I know one guy from my class who went ANG, but he's full time.

Hadn't heard of many others going ANG over the last few years.

i've met a couple of guys that graduated in the 2004-2007 range that went to work for the ANG. one of them is a KC-135 pilot out of alaska. he's started to shift into the full time role, but that was more a personal choice (from how i understood his explaination). although, yes this hasn't been a big hit in the last few years, it's a legit path if you have your heart set on flying. i can get more info for you though, if you'd like :)

That would be very nice, if you could pass some information along, I love the power of being both a merchant marine and a pilot for the USAF. Thanks. :thumb:

What about the sailing part? I'd be interested to know people who spent two years doing flight training and then somehow managed to find an ANG unit that is flexible enough to allow them to also sail.

First part is getting the ANG unit to sign you. You spend about 1 year in UPT, then you are orders for about 1 year. The trouble is getting the slot, the ANG unit will be flexible if you catch say a nice unit, or go for C-130/C-17/C-5/KC-135... Fighters I would expect to be a tad more hectic. If you had say a month off, you would probably spend the entire time flying or getting your hours for the quarter. My goal would be to go for said C-130/C-17/C-5/KC-135 units as they travel alot...and it can be a tad more flexible from posts on Wantscheck.com. "No such thing as a part-time fighter pilot" :yllol:
