It has been suggested on this forum to have copies of all the forms sent to the academy from the Permit to Report Packet. We have made copies of everything that we are mailing. My question is: What do we do with them on I-Day? Would son be allowed to contact me to bring the copies to the Yard if needed or should he carry them all and just leave them in the duffel bag? Also, does the academy keep the Social Security Card or return it to the Midn?

You could always stick a copy in the duffle bag. Or, if something were missing or got lost or thrown up on or whatever......and you had copies along maybe they would let him contact you.........we had them along, just in case. You will see your son for 20-30 minutes after they take the oath.....

I don't remember them taking the social security card. Your plebe could keep in his wallet.

Passport Question

Along those same lines, I have a question regarding passports. Son has passport as suggested, but does he need to take it with him on I-day? I understood of his personal belongings, he only keeps his wallet after all is said and done in Alumni Hall on I-day. Does anyone know if it is recommmed to bring passport on I-day or do we send it to him later?

And, if they do require his passport, not to mention his SS card, which I know they want to see, will parents be able to retrieve those things for safe keeping after the swearing in ceremony or possibly after PPW?

Now the passport I do know about. We took it up to I-Day, plebe did not carry it in. But we had it "just in case." He did NOT need it for plebe summer and requested it just prior to spring break. They may possibly need the passport for summer cruises. But not likely before then. I would leave it home.

When our son wanted his, i looked high and low, all the usual safe keeping spots. Dad looked at me and said, "It is with the stuff we took to I-Day, you know, the duplicate forms, etc." Sure enough.

And, no, I don't think you can retrieve anything for safekeeping. THe SS card ought to be ok in his wallet. Leave the passport at home and send when requested.

This sounds like a good plan. But since we all know it isn't wise to carry around a SS card in your wallet on a permanent basis, should the plebe return the SS card to parents at PPW so it can be stowed in the safe deposit box back home? Or do the mids have a safe spot in their rooms that they can store important stuff like passports, SS cards, cash, etc.?

I must admit my son and I have only lightly perused PTR packet, but do they need to have a current passport? I think my son's is due to expire within the year.

Get that passport renewed now, mumsy. He may need it and once they are there, it is a hassle to take the time to go to P.O. and get that done. Do it now.

Passport Needed

I agree with jennyp...once they are in the USNA, we have no control over their time nor availability. So while you have your DS/DD with you, renew your passport before I-Day. They will not need it right away, not even during Plebe Year, it is just one of those things that you just want to get out of the way. Whenever the passport arrives (it does take a while...), then you can give it to him/her during one of her visits home during Plebe year. In other words you don't have to mail it yet. This way the passport is their main ID along with their Military ID.:thumb:

They do have a "lock box" in their locker in the room. They can place valuables or cash in there.
