Could someone please verify that no dental forms/x-rays are needed to be sent in? Thanks!

I had the same question and when I logged into the CIS system and the Permit to report site, all the other forms are hyperlinks to the actual form, but not the dental

So I re-read the instructions - and I think as long as you don't have braces that you don't need any form.

DS just had his check up and dentist said that his wisdom teeth are fine and that he shouldn't have any problems - so they are staying in for now upon the advice of our dentist. Hope that's ok

My daughter interpreted the dental situation to be "if you don't need something done before end of plebe summer, you don't have to get it done. Don't allow dental stuff to interrupt Plebe Summer."

Actually, I interpreted it to be "if you don't need something done before end of 4/C year, you don't have to get it done."

Older son (Navy enlisted) had dentist appointment before boot. He was told by his recruiters that his wisdom teeth WOULD come out, so we decided to take care of it before hand. (Why get them taken out at boot camp when you can get them done while mom is still around to take care of you? ) Our dentist said he would not recommend taking them out because they were perfectly fine, but he couldn't vouch for what the Navy would want. During boot, they DID NOT remove wisdom teeth, but they did remove two fillings he had in other teeth and replaced them with metal fillings. We were told that it was because metal fillings are somehow less troublesome and preferrable during long months out on the water. All I can say is, DS1 hates them because they are more conductive of hot and cold food.

With this background in mind I took DS2 to dentist for cleaning and check up. They said wisdom teeth are fine. This son has no fillings, so hopefully he won't need dental work, besides cleaning, during plebe year at all. Do they do routine xrays and check up during plebe summer as they do in boot camp?

MomoftheMagik, thanks for the info - glad to hear that we don't have to have his wisdom teeth taken out if they don't need to be taken out :)

In the Permit to Report package it says "A dental screening examination will be conducted during Plebe Summer"

It NEVER occurred to me that DD's wisdom teeth should be evaluated until that Permit to Report Pkg came - and guess what! She has an impacted lower wisdom tooth (she's "deformed", she only has 3 wisdom teeth!!) so all 3 are coming out tomorrow morning. They don't bother her now, but a sideways tooth with roots heading towards the nerve could be bad. I talked with Capt Worm down in the Dental office, he advised that if she came with the wisdom teeth in and they became troublesome, the extraction could impact plebe summer and school, and athletics. Not worth the risk to us, so to the oral surgeon we go.

Capt Worm also told me that brushing teeth has become a mandatory activity for all plebes since his arrival at the Yard because his first summer there, they saw about 50% of the plebes developing gum problems (gingivitis)!! All plebes get a dental exam at some point during the summer and all problems will be addressed.

All good to know.
