Hi all-

I have just completed my first candidate statement for USMA with the parameter of 2500 characters or less in mind. After checking the character count of my statement, I found it to be 2902 characters (with spaces) and 2405 characters (without spaces). I'm assuming that the candidate portal counts a space as a character, however, i want to be sure before I have to cut it down by a few hundred characters. Any insight regarding this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just figured it out! It doesn't look like the spaces were counted as characters.

im pretty sure that if you submit the essay over the limit, a notification will pop up telling you that you are over the limit. I know when I was filling out the activities record, it told me whne I went over the number specified, and that was counting spaces.

If it counts spaces on the website then follow their format and count spaces as well.

Need Candidate Statement Questions

Hi, I just opened my USMA file and it's not LIVE yet, so I can't see what the three questions are. I'm a Varsity baseball player and this weekend is my first free weekend in a long time and I want to get started on my essays. Could you give them to me? I'm applying for the class of 2015. Thanks!

Is the second step kit already posted?

My candidate portal still looks the same. There's always the same message that they're not going to review the files until August.

I didn't realize that the original post was over a year ago...

Jakey if you had a question why would you ask it on a 1+ year thread instead of making your own thread?

you write these three essays? damn, anyone mind sharing the prompts so that i may get started as soon as i can?

The essays are probably different year to year. Relax... writing them now would do absolutely nothing... Just wait till the prompts are put up and then do them.

One of the prompts will most likely have to deal with why you want to serve as an officer in the military. You should have an idea now or you wouldn't be interested in the academies, but finding words to write down on paper is a little harder so that may be something you want to think about in the upcoming months. You will most likely be asked in during your nomination interview(s) as well so just think about it and have answers other then "its free" and what not. There are tons of posts related to this around here so just do a simple search.
