My son would like to prepare for the swimming. What are the requirements to validate swimming?

from the curriculum handbook: (http://www.usafa.edu/df/data/CHB2009-2010.pdf) Looks like you have to take the credits 2 aquatic, it is just which level swimming course you get put in. It also appears some of the courses are more than swimming. there is a note at the bottom about IC sports which counts as credit but I think they still take the courses e.g. swimmers take boxing and boxers take swimming, but I would like to know if swimmers take swimming.

7-11. PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES. Cadets must pass a minimum of 10 Physical
Education (Phy Ed) courses, each worth 0.5 semester hours of course credit. With few
exceptions, cadets take Phy Ed courses each of their eight semesters. Each course consists of an
8-lesson block of instruction. The only exception is Phy Ed 119, Basic Swimming, which is a
16-lesson block. Two Phy Ed courses will be taken in the fourth- and first-class years. Three
Phy Ed courses will be taken in the third- and second-class years.

a. Basic Cadet Training (summer before fourth-class year); Phy Ed 100, Basic PhysicalTraining (pass/fail)

b. Core (required) courses: 3 combatives, 2 aquatics, and physical development
Phy Ed 110 Boxing (males only)
or Phy Ed 114 Self-Defense (females only)
Phy Ed 111 Swimming
or Phy Ed 119 Basic Swimming
Phy Ed 112 Physical Development
Phy Ed 222 Water Survival (prereq: 111 or 119)
or Phy Ed 211 Basic Water Survival (prereq: 111 or 119)
or Phy Ed 219 Basic Swimming II (prereq: 119)
Phy Ed 215 Unarmed Combat I
Phy Ed 315 Unarmed Combat II (prereq: 215)

c. Individual Sport Electives (Required to have at least one of the following):
Phy Ed 340 Racquetball
Phy Ed 341 Tennis
Phy Ed 342 Golf

d. Team Sport Electives (Required to have at least one of the following):
Phy Ed 484 Volleyball
Phy Ed 486 Basketball
Phy Ed 487 Soccer
Phy Ed 488 Softball

e. Open Electives (Required to have at least two of the following):
Phy Ed 483 Scuba
or additional Team or Individual Sport Elective(s)
or Phy Ed 477* Independent Exercise (first-class cadets only)
or Phy Ed 479* Cadet Instructor (first-class cadets only)
* Cadets are registered for these courses, due to unique medical situations, by the
Athletic Department Scheduling and Grading Division (ADPG).

f. Intercollegiate Courses (Substitute Phy Ed course credit for each year on an intercollegiate
roster):
Phy Ed 152 4th-Class Intercollegiate Sports (sub for Phy Ed 112)
Phy Ed 252 3rd-Class Intercollegiate Sports (sub for Individual Sport Elective)
Phy Ed 352 2nd-Class Intercollegiate Sports (sub for Team Sport Elective)
Phy Ed 452 1st-Class Intercollegiate Sports (sub for Open Elective)
Phy Ed 8XX*

When is the pool renovation supposed to be done? I thought it wouldn't be done in time for BCT. Any insight?

it will be done before fall 2011 or sooner. They have a 40 yard waterpolo pool which they can use too and a community pool. The swim team will be practicing in those places and they will either have the swim classes there or postpone them for a year

Swimming and water survival are sophomore courses. However, knowing that the pool was going to be closed, this years freshman class took their swimming and water survival their freshman year. The pool being closed will just mean that the Class of 2014 will take their swimming and water survival classes as scheduled their sophomore year.

Swimming and water survival can be validated but not really by doing anything ahead of time. Other than getting really good at swimming.

To validate, the first day of class the cadet will be required to perform certain things in a fixed amount of time. If they make it, they validate the class and don't have to go to anymore sessions. if they don't make it, then they continue to take the remaining sessions.

Regarding PE classes in general.

These are not like high school PE classes. When i say that, what I mean is don't think it is an easy A. Even if you do everything, it is still not an easy A.

bandit is right on...unless you're really good and/or are naturally talented, the best you can get is pretty much a B. For swimming, I'd also recommend practicing jumping off diving boards just to get comfortable...no need for spectacular dives, just be able to pencil dive without being afraid at 10 meters.

PDub, diving to me means going in head first. Is that what you mean with "pencil dive." Or are you talking about going in feet first? DS has gone off 10 meter platforms before but never head first - always the other way.
