At a "get aquainted (sp?) day a few months ago it was disclosed that the budget for USMMA was nearly doubled...to 75 mill this year and 100 mil next year. Is some of this for capital improvements?

Yes my understanding is that $30.9 Million of this coming year's (GFY2011) President's requested budget from DOT to Congress that totals ~100M for USMMA is for Capital Improvements. Additionally DOT has indicated to Congress it believes it will need to continue funding at that level for some time in order to address the items listed in the Blue Ribbon report that is referenced in the beginning of this thread.

Hopefully through bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate this aspect (the $100M for USMMA) will make it through the federal budget authorization and appropriation process without significant alteration/reduction.

lets start with maybe some pier facilities that arent at risk of imminent collapse, and maybe academic buildings in which the windows open without falling out of their frames, and work up from there:wink:

sounds cool, but not what we the M/N need. Repairs to Fulton/Gibbs would be greatly appreciated by all of the engineering students.

My vote is for immediate and desperately needed renovations to Delano! (I'm amazed you guys didn't think of that first!)

Interesting points however everyone should and can see what the recommendations and priorities are for the expenditure of fundings - they are in the report, additionally to some degree in the testimony in defense of the appropriations they are also described. Finally, Acting Superintendent and Academic Dean Kumar has regularly stated the priorities and plans. Finally, in his now monthly meetings with the faculty and staff of USMMA in Ackerman Hall, Acting Administrator Matsuda talks about them. As I understand it and has been discussed the current plans and efforts underway for fixing the windows of Gibbs and Fulton Halls are indeed already underway and the first big chunk of the additional capital funds in the GFY 2011 budget is indeed for much needed updates/upgrades to Delano Hall, albeit on a scale nowhere near as grand as the recent renovations underway on King Hall, the USNA's Dining Facilities. Of course because the USMMA funding goes through different committees than the other Service Academies< I'm sure we'll see as much or more scrutiny on the USMMA budget request.
