Sports question: Crew vs Sailing?

In high school I did cross country, swimming, and track. Those were great sports (and helped me get in better shape  ), but I would like to try something different. Both crew and sailing come to mind. Does anyone know the biggest differences between these two sports? How difficult is it to walk on to either? How much do they travel for competitions?

Thanks guys! :thumb:

I can speak about crew as a sport. I rowed all through hs and it was difficult. College crew is even more intense. It required strength but also skill and finesse. Walking on is not impossible but is hard. Being thrown right in there with those who have been sweeping way longer then you sucks but it is the easiest way to learn And never hesitate to ask if your doing it wrong cuz if you are every rower in the boat will know its you and want you to fix it. It requires a lot of mental tuffness but if ur dealing with the stress of being a swab u should be able to handle what they dish out. Any more questions just PM me.

Crew, at least, does tend to have at least some kids who don't start until college -- sailing, less so.

Both sports are easy to walk on to. The sailing team especially travels almost every weekend.

You could give either a try. Our DD#1 walked on as a coxswain her 4/c year and found it to be a great team!
Crew at CGA is very, very time intensive in both Fall and Spring seasons and will take up many of your weekends.
Have known a couple of cadets involved in sailing at CGA and they too loved it.
Great thing about CGA is that you can find a sport that gives you both your sports credit AND something that you can have fun and meet many friends.
You'll be able to meet with these teams during Swab summer (unless it's changed that will be in Wednesday afternoons).

Thanks guys for responding! While I am slightly leaning more towards crew right now, I hope I can meet with both teams and try them out to see what I like best.

Would any of you say that crew is one of the most challenging sports out there?

No, no one would.

Come on now Luigi....you're not one of those tough guys who thinks if it aint football it aint a sport are ya???

Crew will get you in great condition Sam, and is very demanding during the off season as well as the regular season(s).

Either way, you can't lose. You'll find the right place, I'm sure.

Great recovery Admiral...you had me going there for a minute.

I would say 80% of those on the crew teams never picked up an oar before they came to New London. On my son's novice(freshman) team they only had the cox and one experienced rower, but they went on to medal at the New England Championships.

He played football throughout h.s. but found crew to be even more intense. They "erg" all year round and row on the river in the fall and spring. But Luigi is right it's a cult and they are a very close-knit group.

Sailing is good too but if you want a real work out try crew. :thumb:

At USCGA, crew is not a sport.

It's a cult.

AH! You beat me to it!

Try out whatever you want. A CGA I played soccer, hockey, lacrosse, indoor track, and a variety of ICs.

I wasn't great at everything I did, but I had a good time.

Don't let that stop at CGA. I play of a hockey team, alumni (CGA) soccer team, and two softball teams right now (easier to do when you're at a staff tour.)

people will debate that till the end of time... but if you select crew you come to hate the erg lol they r very important. I personly find it to be the hardest part of the sport because it just you. good luck!
