computers for 2014

Yes, but it's a secure network so you as a midshipman won't be able to access it. Sucks, I know :(

ok -once the plebes are allowed computers can they FB /Skype or anything like that? Can they have a webcam so when they call home we can see them?

Hi,

The Plebes can web cam but media is generally an earned privilege unless being used for schoolwork.

However, where there is a will, there is a way . . .

I checked out the computer set up at Lenovo's website and it looks like I can upgrade this computer over the next 4 years. It's nice that they got DDR3 RAM so I can eventually double that to 8GB. The Socket type on the MoBo will support the Core-i7 and the video card (which isn't really great right now) is on a PCI-Express slot which could be fitted with a card that's ten times better in a year or two for less than $200. That said I have no idea if IT will let us open up our computers.

I don't know exactly how good the netbook will be. I don't expect to have to do much more then word processing on it so I'm not too worried.

While it's not the best setup off the bat, I am very thankful that most of it will be scalable for me over the next 4 years as parts prices come down.

Does anyone know if we can use external hard drives? The hard drive space is fairly limited as is.

Yes and they are at the Mid Store!

500 G hard drive is cheap there. I forget how much but we found it was cheaper than anywhere else except the net, but then you had to pay shipping.

How much do this year's Plebe class (2013) actually use the netbook they got last year? And for what purposes?

Before taking any action with your computer, talk to your Company MISLO to see if it is allowed. ITSD won't hesitate to quarantine your computer.
Skype and any other peer-to-peer applications normally have been off limits (not sure if it has changed, but I am pretty sure it hasn't).

My Plebe No More said everyone's netbook is used as a paperwieght. Most everyone's has broken by now ...

2013 had cheap netbooks from Dell, but 2014 is getting (what I think seems to be) higher end Lenovo products.

A desktop and a notebook, which is substantially less than a laptop, in almost everyway.

Is it a notebook or a NETbook?

Notebook=laptop as far as I'm concerned, although it would seem I read right.

Why not just give them a good LAPtop with a docking station and call it a day? Goodness, I use that here at work every day, and I'm doing stuff way more calculation- and graphics-intense than any Mid would normally do for class. What gives?

I wonder if the march of technological progress over four years has anything to do with it. My laptop just got replaced after three years....

yeah, our netbooks pretty much sucked, mine hasn't broken yet but I know way too many people who have. Mine's pretty much a paper weight, semi-useful when on CMOD or staying up early in the morning to write a paper in my bed since technically you aren't allowed to be up past 11 as a plebe...

As for upgrading your computer, don't waste your thought or breath. 4 gigs of ddr3 is more than plenty for anything you'll be doing as well as your processor and GPU. If you're really worried about gaming, these pc's really hang with the best of em...

Why in the world would they issue BOTH a desktop and a portable (netbook, notebook, laptop, whatever)?? That's totally insane. Having to manage files on both; back up both; update software on both; etc. Trying to figure out if you stored a paper on which and then having to sync them. Desktops are pretty much dinosaurs now. I would recommend not even using the desktop and simply plugging the laptop/notebook into the monitor, or using a docking station.

Would the Academy care?

I would assume that most of their data is stored on servers, and therefore can be accessed from any computer.
As a soon to be plebe, here's my opinion on the netbooks: the Dell ones they issued for 2013 seem to have too many problems and lack in functionality, but the Lenovo's that 2014 is getting seem to be able to handle what they were designed for quite comfortably.
I believe that because it is lightweight but still powerful (for a netbook, don't get me wrong...), some mids will be inclined to use them during lectures to take notes.

Macs are best

NOTHING beats a Mac and the new Ipads would fit he "netbook"need. The old idea of incompatibility simply is no longer true with the Intel processors.
