I would like to buy my son a good watch to have when he leaves. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as brand and/or styles.

I'm going to go with the G shock as well. They are durable and if they are lost or destroyed at sea it won't hurt too much.

Keep in mind that if he shows up at Indoc with a watch it might be taken away. It will be returned when Indoc is over.

Any durable watch will due.

Depends upon their goals.

We bought our DS a Citizens Nighthawk for HS graduation (wants to become a aviator) and a Nike something to bang around in.

just my 2 cents

We got our DS a really nice watch for HS graduation, he took it to KP in the winter, for sea year he plans to bring a few cheapie watches since we heard they get really beat up.

This might cause a little consternation, but for the time being I would avoid getting a watch with the USMMA symbol on it.

G-Shocks tend to be very popular. I like something digital with an alarm function. The reason being that when he finds a comfy place to hide and take a nap during the day he needs a way to wake himself so as to not be late for [insert function here].

I would get a digital Casio watch that is atomic time. I got one plebe year and used it a lot when I was out at sea. Its important if your a Deck Major to have accurate time so that would be my suggestion...I wore that thing until the band just wore away.

I agree skip the USMMA or KP on the face for now - go with the G-Shock or something similar at least until your mid returns to campus AFTER their second sea year, and by then you and he/she will likely be saving those kind of $$$ for their Class Ring....

The USMMA watch, and similar stuff like the USMMA Chair, etc would indeed be an appropriate graduation gift though. Of course as I keep pointing out though there are also often a good selection of used Ferrari 308 Mondial GT's to be had on EBay as well and what 20 something KP grad wouldn't cherish such a $30,000 or so gift to remember their time at the USMMA by.....

Here's a real winner: Can get it on Amazon...

Citizen Men's AT0200-05E Eco-Drive Chronograph Canvas Watch. Survived NAPS and Plebe Year and it keeps on tickin'.

cheap, accurate watch. Timex works ... as do others. Plebe son lost it about half way through the year. Would have lost an expensive one as well ... a nice watch is great for dress occassions ... get a water resistant/shock resistant one for every day ... just a thought ..

This is a pretty old thread -2010. Looking for high school grad gift -do many academy students still use a watch? Best watch 2020? I understand there might be limited use during plebe year due to restrictions. Any suggestions welcome. Other ideas?

My son was suggesting a watch for high school graduation but he was talking Tag Heuer since he thinks they are cool. I like the idea of a casio g shock or something like that is based on atomic time. And it won't be a problem if it gets lost or banged up. I do like the Ferrari idea maybe has a present to myself though

Yes, plebes can definitely use (and need) a watch. Many of them have gotten used to using their phone for keeping track of time, but that will not work as plebes because they will not have access to their phone for awhile. (How long and under what conditions depends on their company.) Definitely go with something very sturdy. I would go cheap and save the nice watch for USMMA graduation. The watch will take quite a beating during their stay at KP, especially during sea year. Many mids wear G Shock or something similar. My DD swears by her $20 Timex and saves her dress watch for special occasions only.

Easy Get him a G Shock
We got one for my son High School graduation and he took it to NROTC Indoc at Great Lakes and it worked very well for him all year long
