The Army is offering cash bonuses of up to $35,000 to retain young officers serving in key specialties -- including military intelligence, infantry and aviation -- in an unprecedented bid to forestall a critical shortage of officer ranks that have been hit hard by frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan

Great incentive. The Navy has been using it for years for aviators. I think I got approximately this amount back in 1978. The maximum now is around 125k. Sounds like it is also going to work for the Army.

If it isn't already, they should make it tax-free, too.

Nice to see capitalism in action. This will work; the question is will it be enough?

Ours was not tax free. It is working. Only been in effect a couple of weeks and already 1/3 of those eligible have signed up.

I just read the other day while the navy has used bonuses for years for many speciaties from subs to aviators - the Army had never had a bonus in place for officers - except for aviation.
They do need this - hopefully it will work.

Maybe one of the sub guys can confirm, but I think the sub bonus was/is a signing bonus and not a mid-career retention bonus.

could be - it was talking about any bonuses of any kind - will see if I can find it.

This link is an interesting report on Army Officer Shortages from July 2006:

The below quote in found on page 5

To at least partially address this situation, the Army has recently introduced
several non-financial retention incentives that result in extended service obligations.
However, unlike the Navy, the only Army officer retention or continuation bonus
currently being paid to line officers is Aviation Career Incentive Pay, which only
applies to a small fraction of the Army officer corps.
