The Candidate Portal just opened today for the USMA applications and the section where you need a teacher's evaluation, you basically fill in their name and contact information and I guess an evaluation sheet gets sent to them.

But my question is, do my teachers actually have to write a legit letter of rec? Or do they just answer a few questions, check a few boxes, and fill out like a survey?

The recommendation is a standard form--it makes for more of a level playing field. The questions require more objective data than just a glowing letter of recommendation.

Word of caution: when teachers go to log on to site, they will get the security warning saying the certificate is not recognized. It may behoove you to let your teachers know they may get this warning, but the site is secure.

It is nice if your teachers write letters. However, the form is extremely important. You will get scores based on which boxes are checked. So make sure the form is not overlooked. Letter is of secondary importance and not necessary.

I'm looking at the SOE on my candidate portal, do the teachers need to be of a certain year? Can they be from freshmen year, junior, sophomore etc? And its filling out the survey thing correct? A letter is not required? Thank You.

I would also like to know the answer to this question.

But I also would like to know: is the form for USMA the same as USNA??

because I had my math and english teacher submit whatever form they send for the USNA

so If I send the USMA form will they have to do a completely different thing?

They prefer teachers from your junior year, but any high school teacher can do the trick. Ones from your junior year probably know the current you the best and would make the most sense to have fill out the form.

The teachers fill out the form evaluating you in your classwork, peer relationships, etc, and no its not a letter. Save those letters for the nomination process.

Yes its different, but basically the same concept. My math teacher has already done both and he said they are basically the same, doesn't take much time at all.
