Does anyone know if a plebe can substitute a TI-89 calculator that they already own for the Voyager 200 that will be issued to the midshipman at the beginning of the academic year?

Per the USNA website - "These computers are complemented by a Texas Instrument Voyage 200 Graphing Calculator; midshipmen who already own this model calculator may return the one issued them unopened for credit."

Wait a minute. THAT is the "calculator" that new Mids get nowadays? That thing is more powerful than the COMPUTER we were issued!

What the heck? You guys trying to launch Tomahawks from Michaelson Hall or something?

Why? What's the big deal?

My daughter's HS also required all students to have a specific brand and model of calculator. As I understand it, the things are complicated enough that teachers don't want to wade through figuring out each student's calculator to figure out problems that may be due to incorrect button-pushing. If they all have the same model, they can all be told how to enter the program or problem, and if they need a specific algorithm, it only has to be written once.

DD saved almost $200 at USNA by already having the "right" model.

Use the 89 for the validation tests because they know how to use it, use the 200 for the ac year because once you learn how to use it, it can do anything and they still probably only know a third of what it does.

I think they are supposed to only have a basic Scientific calculator for the validation tests. Could a TI-89 be used?

Can't speak to that in my day there were no restrictions.

Same here.

The most popular were the TI-III and the HP's.

Did I just date myself? :yllol:

I still have that TI, BTW. Serves me well. :shake:

Will they store the calculator my plebe-to-be brings with him and return it after PS? I would really like to have my daughter use it for her senior year instead of buying another one.

Dad taught son to use his slide rule. Son's response..."Thank God for technology!" Still think they should learn to use one.

Your Plebe will have a chance on I-day to take his duffel bag/backpack of stuff from home to his room so that he can take out things (like the calculator) that he will use during PS. Anything not needed (or not allowed) will be stored. The calculator should not leave his possession, so it will be available for your daughter.

Great, thanks.

Zaph, I don't think son was being a smartmouth. I think it confused him. Of course, as mentioned by TPG, I can't figure out his calculator to save my life.
