Company Assignments Have Been Mailed

H Company, 16th Platoon. (I thought the Company's all had numeric names, not letters)

How many during Plebe summer are in each company? In each Platoon?

Just for Plebe Summer, they combine two company's and make one company.

For example, they combine all the Plebes in 1st and 2nd company and make ALPHA Company. 3rd and 4th company are combined to make BRAVO company. Then they are called 1st and 2nd platoon. And 3rd and 4th platoon.

But once Plebe Summer is over, the ALPHA, BRAVO, CHARLIE, etc. all goes away and the companies are only referred to numerically. 1st company, 2nd company, 3rd company, etc ...

The entire group of Plebes is referred to as the 4th Class Regiment.

Care to elaborate on the ouch? Thanks!

As stated previously on this thread, the bearsharks are disliked by many in the brigade.
I dragged with a guy from 25th a long time ago, and he said his company was full of tools.

One of the main reasons everyone hates 25th Company is because they are told to do so during plebe summer and never think to question it. If your son/daughter is assigned to the Bearsharks then you can count on three things at the very least:

1) They will have a real plebe summer, not a summer camp.
2) They will join one of the tightest knit companies in the brigade during the Ac Year.
3) They will walk away from plebe year with a real sense of accomplishment.

Take it from me...I just did it....

How do they assign companies and platoons? Is it a random system?

One of my sons just finished his Plebe year in 27th company. It was referred to as "27 - Plebe heaven".

But, the culture of a company can radically change from year to year depending on the temperament and leadership style of the new upperclassmen.

The one thing I have noticed that is different about the Academy from my days is that distinctively different cultures have emerged amongst the companies. They all have cutesy little nicknames and even their own logo. That just wasn't a big deal in my day. It seems, these days, one company's plebes may have more privileges than another company's. In our day, everything was done much more at the Brigade-level. Either ALL the Plebes were secured from chopping or NONE of the Plebes were secured from chopping. Either ALL the Plebes had music privileges or NONE of the Plebes had music privileges. Either ALL the Plebes got "carry-on" or NONE of the Plebes got "carry-on".

(When a Plebe is granted "carry-on" that means that he basically doesn't have to know his rates, doesn't have to chop, doesn't have to keep his eyes in the boat, doesn't have to square corners and sound off ... etc. Basically, he doesn't have any typically Plebe-like responsibilities. It's very rare and is usually granted for a very limited time.)

As Plebes, we all sort of felt like we were ALL having the same experience. There was never any sense that the Plebes in 5th company were being abused whereas the Plebes in 33rd company were having an "Animal House" experience. (Yes, there used to be 36 companies. Currently they only have 30. They will be going back to 36 companies, supposedly, after this year. That means that about 15-18 members of each company will be reassigned. That means that some members of the Class of 2014 may only be in their company for one year. It kind of sucks.)

Interesting that Navy is the same way. From everything I've heard & learned in the past couple years as my son prepares for AF, that's something that I've definitely noticed as different. West Point (at least in the 80's) was as you describe. Every plebe had the same priviliges, number of passes, got their stereo after Christmas, was at ease or not (depending on whether or not we beat Navy, which incidentally we did that year and 2 of the other 3 years I was there! ). I've noticed at AF it seems like your 4th class experience can range incredibly based on the squadron - some may have phones back the day Basic ends - others not until Thanksgiving. Some may be allowed external computer monitors and even games; others not. Squadron commanders can put the whole squadron on restriction or whatever. At WP, you (individually) could be in trouble (academics, failing a PT test, demerits, etc.) and not have certain privileges, but it was because you'd messed up. I think I like that better. And of course my son is hoping for an "easier" squadron - guess we'll see in a couple days!

L Company, 21st platoon. Does that mean we'll be around each other plebe summer and then split up once AC year starts?

No, all Midshipmen will be "scrambled" for the first time in almost 2 decades during next Summer (2011). The current Brigade of 30 Companies will become 36 Companies like it had once been.
