Email from USNA - NASS

Just curious....How many NASS attendees have received an email from the Admissions Officer at USNA since coming home?

We received one saying that the CFA results were posted immediately after NASS.

Now, two weeks later one comes from the Admissions Officer, stating the Mids were very impressed with son's performance at NASS and they hoped he would pursue the admissions process. Also had a number of questions they wanted him to answer.

Do they send this email to everyone who went to NASS?

My son got a phone call. I remember thinking, "Surely they can't be calling 2100 people!" It was exciting. I'd say it's great news that your son has gotten this email, but I will add that inspite of being 3 Q'd with 3 nominations and a recommendation from his NASS Squad Leader, my son still got a TWE in April.

The journey you are beginning is quite a trip. It's a huge emotional investment, but will show you how determined your son is to reach his goals. My son has already reapplied for the Class of 2015, so the "fun" begins again for us!

We got the same email and phone call today asking if D had any questions or wanted additional help with the admissions process--was excited but not so much after seeing kmaidaho's post.

That's just crazy! I wish I could understand the insanity

Didn't mean to be a wet towel...just wanted to share what our experience was. My advice, with the advantage of hindsight, is to apply to as many SA's as your son/daughter will be willing to attend. Also apply to the same ROTC Scholarship programs and get everything done early. Have your son/daughter also apply for regular scholarships and lastly, try to make Plans B, C, D, E and F viable possibilities in the event the TWE arrives.

In our case, we heard too late on NROTC and USNA...all of the regular scholarship application deadlines had passed. We are grateful that the university close by was willing to offer a few small scholarships, so we have some help with tuition, but OUCH! It will still be a tough year financially.

The TWE experience was the most devastating experience I've faced as a parent (and I feel very blessed that this is the worst I've experienced!). Still, if we had been better prepared for the uncertainty and the WAITING and had really great back-up plans in place, it would have been an easier pill to swallow.

Thanks all.

The phone call came today. Son had just had his wisdom teeth pulled and couldn't really talk, so they said they'd call back tomorrow.

Looks like this is somewhat typical.

No phone call here in FL., but an email from a coach DS met at NASS #3 had him fired up.

kmaidaho is right on. apply early to all SA and ROTC programs. And most important have alternate plan if SA is first choice.

DS triple qualified with nomination USNA early December, CWV end of Feb, very good ACT, 7 varsity letters, team captain, class president number 1 rated HS in state etc etc ....TWE April 14th. Disappointed but very excited to move to alternate plan - NROTC University of Michigan

Most likely will re-apply to USNA 2015

FYI we always referred to NROTC as alternate plan instead of plan B. I know it is a play on words, but plan B just sounds too much like second choice.

That's a really good suggestion. Plus it sounds like it gives the kids a choice if they do get the appointment so they don't feel bound to accept it if they've changed their mind some in the meantime, just because they'd feel like they were letting people down to take plan B. We're definitely going to be playing up the "alternate plan" idea this year - maybe several alternates!

I attended session 3 and I have not received an email or phone call. Should I be worried?

My son attended session 2 and hasn't heard anything either (other than from his BGO). However son #1 attended last year and never got an email or call and still got a very early LOA. Thinking it's probably somewhat subjective - targeting certain things and/or very strong candidates. Certainly doubt that the majority get them! Hang in there, work on your application, and don't worry about the things you can't do anything about!

Both my sons got accepted into NASS. One elected not to attend. One, somewhat reluctantly, attended and did not enjoy it very much. He also did not do very well on the CFA (Candidate Fitness Assessment) while there. Pull-ups are not his thing. Neither got a phone call afterwards from anybody.

Both got LOA's and appointments.

I don't think there is any way to figure some of this stuff out.

You should never allow your high's to get too high nor your low's to get too low. You have to find some emotional middle ground during the admissions process. It's generally a waste of time trying to read "tea leaves".

Thank you! I was particularly worried cause I was kinda out of shape at NASS. I didnt fall behind, but I didn't really shine either.
