I am signing up for the Thurston Studios web site so that we can view the photos and events as the summer progresses. I know that people on this forum have mentioned how great it was to "watch" the summer. Has anyone ordered the DVDs from them? They are pricey and I am wondering if they might be worth it. I can't find any info about the length of the DVD or quality.

Any advice from past customers?

We only ordered one photograph in the end. I figured the cost of joining the site was worth being able to view the events of the summer. I did not order the DVD so cannot speak to that. However we did receive a Class of 2010 DVD from the Academy at the end of Plebe Summer. Although not personalized, it was a good. That being said - my son has never watched it, maybe in 20 years!

Hi,

I thought access to the website was worth it during plebe summer - I believe you get a credit toward photos which I did use toward a couple of plebe summer photos.

I didn't purchase the plebe summer dvd but did order the sea trials dvd and was disappointed.

USNA has a facebook page where USNA posts pictures during plebe summer (and other events) on a pretty regular basis. This is free and the photos are good.

Also don't forget about DropShots. There have been a few women who have been constants for the past 4 years. 3 had Class of 2010 kids, and 2 still live in the area so may be uploading this summer.

Go to http://www.dropshots.com/USNA2010and07 to start with. On the left side bar you will see all sorts of "Friends" You can tell who is posting when you see a day stamp next to their name. Another has indicated that she would be around this summer is http://www.dropshots.com/nushic

Just be aware that with new Dant and new Supe at some point access for these individuals may be limited as they have no official affiliation. The nice thing about Dropshots over facebook is that you can click on the picture to enlarge it and then download a fairly large printable picture. Facebook pictures many times are too small.

I thought Thurston was awfully overpriced, but you know what? The best photo ever taken of my now-22-year-old Mid was a candid Thurston picture. I just treasure it.

Pricey $$ , yes I definitely agree, but the photos we purchased at PPW (Thorton studio had a block of tables in Dalhgren Hall with a dozen PCs set up to find and view your "waldo" during PS activities) are cherished by all of us (including the Midn)....we also bought the PS DVD that was customized to his PS Company....it was a hit at Christmas....he showed it to many of his "civilian" buddies......We'd buy it again :thumb: even at the ridiculous cost:thumbdown:

DVD was just OK and Company specific but being able to look through the schedule and photos was worth the entrance fee. They are definitely pricey but in the end we bought a couple of the group pictures. She will appreciate them down the road. Dropshots has a lot of pictures but hard to recognize your plebe unless she/he has bright red hair. They are pricey because they have the monopoly. You can't get the pictures anywhere else.

Pricey - but it is great therapy looking for "waldo" over the summer. We ended up ordering a photo book and gave it to our son at the end of Plebe year. He loved it. Once in a lifetime.

USNA has begun posting I Day minus 1 photos on Facebook. It will be interesting to see how much of Plebe summer will be posted. I wish we had Facebook 2 years ago. We bought the DVD from Thurston. It was ok. We then got a free one from USNA. I was very grateful for the ladies that use dropshots.

Ok, are we saying "Thurston" because we think it not appropriate to mention THORNTON??? I'm often not appropriate anyway....just asking.

The daily looking for Waldo was great. We bought only 4-6 pictures. Then bought the DVD thing. It was, well, ok. When the offer came later for a Sea Trials DVD, we declined. And USNA put up great photos of Sea Trials, lots of them, all day long, on facebook.

Our mid has never watched the DVD. "I lived it, Mom. I don't want to watch it!"

If I had to do it over again, definitely pay the fee, watch for waldo daily and get a few shots. I don't think you are missing much if you do not get the DVD.

No, I used "Thurston" because I copied the OP's mistake. You are right, it is Thornton Studios. I knew it was TH something. I guess I wasn't that impressed with the product. I just checked out their website. It has improved over the years. I don't know if that means anything, just saying.

Does anyone have a link to sign up? I went to their site and couldn't find anything - when I clicked on the USNA Parent Link I was brought to the USNA Alumni site?

Anyone know where I should go to sign up and see these pictures?

Advertising on these boards isn't allowed. In my view, this discussion does NOT amount to advertising, so I have no problem mentioning the name as a resource for pix.

The DVDs interesting, I guess. I have it sitting around here somewhere.... The only times I've ever watched it are when parents forced me to show everyone what we did. So good investment for the parents, but now it sits in a box.

My Bad!

I started the thread with the wrong name! So sorry. I didn't even notice. BTW..Thornton Studios photographers were everywhere on I-Day!!!

I personally dislike Thornton. Their exorbitant prices and little exclusive contract give me the impression that they prey on the emotions of parents.

I find their website rather hard to navigate. Does anyone know if photos from yesterday are on their website yet? I did see the photos on Facebook.

Thornton Is overpriced and a PITA

lousy customer service and a terribly behind the times website. The ladies who post on dropshots do it better and for free!
