I was not accepted as an official candidate because my act scores were not high enough my gpa is alright as is my class schedule and leadership is strong. How do i gain canidateship. Also i was accepted as a candidate at West Point. Am i able to cross commission if i attened west point?

based on usna's website, some grad do cross commission- they list the number of grads going to aviation, swo, sub, marines, bud/s etc, and cross commissioning

why not consider nrotc though?

There have been threads on this question in previous years, but the short answer is that I would not recommend attending West Point if you really want to be commissioned as a Navy or MC officer. It is possible to cross-commission, but the numbers are extremely low, usually two or three out of a class of ~1000. If I remember correctly, someone from another service academy must agree to also cross-commission (essentially to swap places).

One exception (to the cross-commissioning swap) is the Merchant Marine Academy. Their graduates can choose to be commissioned into any of the US military branches.

Im am looking into nrotc recinving a number and cross vommisioning. Thanks yall it was a great help

This past year, one (1) USNA grad was permitted to cross-commission into the US Army. That was it (none to USAF, USCG, etc.) and that almost didn't happen.

You should absolutely NOT count on being able to cross-commission. It is EXTREMELY rare today -- much more so than even a few years ago.

You get a candidate# from USNA GENERALLY by having ACT/SAT scores high enough for USNA to believe you're a potential candidate. However, that's not universally true and otherwise well-qualified candidates who don't have great scores can still be made official candidates. I suggest you consult your BGO.

Although I graduated in '79, my roommate got a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force. All he really had to do, as I recall, was get interviewed and explain why he wanted to do this. And then he was allowed to apply for a cross-commission.

His reasoning was: He decided he really wanted to fly. But, he wore glasses. The Navy had a zero waiver policy for pilots. If you didn't have 20/20, uncorrected vision, you could not be a Naval Aviator. Yet, the Air Force did give out waivers.

The Commandant or Supe, or whoever made the final decision, thought his reasoning was sound and approved it. He was the only one in the Class of '79 to get a commission in the Air Force.
