Presidential Nomination Question

You do not apply for Presidential, your parents ask for the nom. They should be able to find out through their base education dept. They will be required to show that they have the min requirements for the Presidential, which means they must prove through their military records, something you will not have access to.
For people new to the site or lurking, only military can receive a Presidential. It is tied to the amount of time they have served. There are no max numbers given out, only max appointed (100). Typically 450+ apply for Presidential.
To me the real perks of the Presidential are:
1. If you have an LOA, you will get an apptmt as soon as the AFA acknowledges the nom.
2. It allows your packet to go up earlier than the "typical candidate", you should still apply for the VP, and all 3 MOCs.
"typical candidate" will not get their nom until end of October, and for some it could be as late as the end of January. You can't meet a board until you have a nom. THUS, if you are the "typical candidate" apply for the VP, because you will get the nom and meet a board while you wait for the MOC.
Remember you only need ONE NOM to get an apptmt. Just because you get a NOM from the VP that does not mean you will be CHARGED to them, same with Presidential, ROTC, or MOC's.

My understanding is that you request a Pres. nomination by sending a letter to admissions and providing the correct paperwork depending on your parent's military service status.

Actually you write directly to the USAFA/RRS folks requesting the Presidential or other "military related" nominations.

I keep seeing this reference to not being able to "meet a board" until after you have a nom. Please explain then how a LOA is sent to candidates before they have a nom. Are you saying that candidates that get a LOA get it some way other than "meeting a board?"

You are correct. While some on the forum indicate you cannot go to the Board without a nom, that is inaccurate. Files go to the Board as soon as they are complete (excluding the nom and DoDMRB). The Board makes a decision to either give an appointment/LOA or not. If no appointment/LOA it goes to the Board the following week (kind of a second look). If no LOA on look #2, then it is set aside until either a nomination is received or the file has been updated (new SAT/ACT, new awards or whatever, these updates increase the WCS) hence the suggestion that candidates submit the file early and update their file with substantive changes regularly.

I don't think this is correct unless this just changed this year, the applicant does request a Presidential Nom. There is a format for it along with the address on the admissions website. With the application you have to send documention of eligibility..ie, photo copy of parents active duty id card, reserve points listing, etc, the sample application will tell you what you need to send. The address DS usedlast year is on my old computer, but you should be able to find it online. It went to the Directorate of Admissions at USAFA. If I can find the address I'll come back and post it.
