Hey all,

Newbie here,

Xavier University in Cincinnati offers full tuition and fees to all ROTC scholarship winners
Link here

Xavier is a private catholic college.

Are there other private or state colleges that offer full tuition and fees to
out-of-state students?

I know Texas offers in state tuition to out of state students that join the Texas National Guard and are in the S.M.P.

Arizona State does. I don't have a link to provide to prove it, but I know it does because I live in Michigan and I got the scholarship there for this Fall and it covers full tuition and fees.

Army ROTC scholarships include tuition+fees, book allowance and a stipend. Some universities supplement that with additional scholarship funds that cover room and board as well.

ROTC programs provide OOS tuition. However, one cautionary note. An OOS tution scholarship can cost a PMS two to three times granting an in-state scholarship. So, I think this makes it harder to get an OOS award for some public universities.

If you are interested in a Catholic school check out Seattle University. They have an exceptional ROTC benefit program.

I was told by a recruiter at University of Tenn that a scholarship would cover tution and fees only up to the "In State Tuition rate", that everything after that was the cadets responsibility to pay.

(He was National Guard, pushing SMP so his honesty may be questionable.)

If you have a link for ROTC paying out of state tuition, I would love to see it.

gojack, here is a link to the ROTC page describing the scholarship benefits. It makes no mention of only covering a portion of tuition.

In our discussions with 5 universities this past year we never encountered any situtation like you describe. We did have a situation where my daughter wanted to attend an OOS school and we knew it was a tough call for the PMS because he could grant 3 in-state scholarships for the cost of giving her one OOS scholarship. In this discussion it became apparent that he had the option of giving a 3-year Advanced Designee scholarship to her to cut the total cost of an OOS scholarship. That did not happen though.

The information you received does sound suspect to me and I would definately call the PMS to get it clarified.

Hope this helps.

My son is on an ROTC scholarship as an OOS cadet at VMI- and his full tuition is covered at the Out of State rate.

IIRC National Guard scholarships are quite different from the regular scholarships (different funding source) so I can understand the confusion. The 4-year scholarships that you apply for through Cadet Command are all full-tuition regardless of residency or public/private.

In fact, a year ago, they were still advertising a $1000 kicker (above and beyond tuition) for qualified students.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign waives tuition for all students enrolled in ROTC, you don't even need to be on a regular scholarship.

He is confused. The ROTC scholarship pays for ALL tuition and fees. In-state, out of state or private.
In many states the Guard will pay in-state tuition for their National Guard soldiers.
There are a variety of programs so it gets really confusing.
I don't think he was being 'dishonest' but rather confusing two different programs.

There are benefits of SMP and those who don't get a scholarship should consider it. You have to be careful though if you want to serve active duty after graduation, as opposed to serving in the Guard or Reserves.
