They say that smell is the sense most closely tied to memory. Today, while laying out BII in the motor pool, I opened a bustle box and was overwhelmed by the unique and unmistakable smell of a military vehicle. I was immediately reminded of the first time I smelled those smells, as a young man of 18 at Beast. So many new sights and smells and ideas await you. The smell of kiwi. The crack of a 5.56 round. The screech of an arty-sim. A whole new glossary of terms which, in the end, is the first step to a whole new way of thinking. Of course TA-50 has changed a lot, but the smell of a wet poncho endures. Thayer Hall will always smell to you the way it smelled on R-day.
