They say that smell is the sense most closely tied to memory. Today, while laying out BII in the motor pool, I opened a bustle box and was overwhelmed by the unique and unmistakable smell of a military vehicle. I was immediately reminded of the first time I smelled those smells, as a young man of 18 at Beast. So many new sights and smells and ideas await you. The smell of kiwi. The crack of a 5.56 round. The screech of an arty-sim. A whole new glossary of terms which, in the end, is the first step to a whole new way of thinking. Of course TA-50 has changed a lot, but the smell of a wet poncho endures. Thayer Hall will always smell to you the way it smelled on R-day.

5 days until the rest of your lives, candidates! You are all very lucky.

How about the smell of wet gray trou?! I also connect with the distinctive smell of a wooden ammo box.

Or the smell of an MRE heater!

The greater point to all this, which I hope our young folks grasp, is that they about to undertake a formative experience. It's an experience as a student and a warrior; a custodian of the nation and a member of the greatest land combat force ever devised. It's an experience that will forever bind us to those who have gone before, and to those who serve long after we are gone. They will likely find, as I have, that for a great many fine men and women all over this nation, their years in the Army were among the most formative years of their lives, as well.

Our candidates are about to inherit a sacred trust, and join a timeless fraternity of Americans.

And a proud nation is grateful for all of you. Good Luck and Godspeed.

Goosebumps. Really made me start to realize that this is WAY bigger than just me...if you know what I'm saying.

Well, if your subtitle is any indication, you'll enjoy the extra fraternity of playing Army football. Turn things around up there, will ya? I'm tired of having to be drunk to endure Army-Navy games! :thumb:

Oh boy...must resist comparisons....can't help it...must...not....ahhhh....
Parris Island in the Morning, nothing on Earth smells that bad! Especially if the tide is out...Try heading to the chow hall with a health breeze to your back and the rotting stench of low tide at Parris Island. The food even tastes like it!

West Point is a breath of fresh air compared to that! Uh Rah!

There is also that smell of fresh uniforms from the laundry in the morning sun, that and starch we used in prehistoric time. Good old Magic Sizing!

Oh yes sir...if you've heard anything about Army football, it's that Coach Ellerson is turning the whole damn thing around. And the players, well...we plan to lend a helping hand as well.
