I've taken interest into the school and have made my candidate account this year. but I have basically no idea what to do at this point.. Currently the only thing that's in is my ACT score of 28.. West Point also sent me 5 green envelopes. I'm stressed out. As more time passes by, the closer to deadline it gets. I'm not sure what my chances of getting into the school is.. but I'd like to take a shot at the school. (If i don't get in this year, I'll try to reapply next year..) So could you people help me what must be done from this step? and what do i need to mail in the 5 green envelopes? Please and Thank You!

First, don't panic. The deadline is sometime next year.

When you first opened your account with them, didn't they send you a brochure explaining the steps needed to apply?
Don't worry about the number of envelopes. They will send you more later, more than you need.

Basically, you need to submit the following items

Use the provided envelopes:
1) Your High School transcript
2) Three recommendations from Math, Science, English teachers (ask your teachers to fill out the USMA recommendation forms)
3) CFA test results (ask you physical education teacher to do it only after you practice them enough)
4) Your ACT scores (send in your copy or ask ACT to send an official copy directly)

Submit online:
5) When you log in to your portal as a candidate, you will also need to complete the assays and submit them online.

Seek through your MOC:
6) At the same time, you also need to seek a nomination from either the congressman of you district, the 2 senators of your state, or the VP. To increase your chance, apply to all of them. Don't get stressed out. Their deadlines for a nomination are usually in Oct/Nov so you still have some time. However, there are some work involved. You don't have to know them, but you must first go to their website to download the forms for nomination. Complete the forms and send them in. Each one may have a different requirement. Some may want to interview you. That is normal.

Make Appointment for a Physical Exam As Directed:
7) You will also schedule a free medical exam. The results will be sent to USMA directly.

Those should cover most requirements. If I miss anything, others here can help add. You need to read that brochure or visit USMA's website go to admissions for the most reliable details. You also need to have a habit of login to your portal to view the updates.

Although my background is USNA, I know that USMA has at least 3 other avenues to help you. First, go to the USMA website and search under admissions. There is probably some useful information there on what to do. Second, you have a liaison officer (not sure what USMA calls them) similar to USNA Blue & Gold Officers. These individuals can assist you with the application process and answer questions along the way. Your on-line system should have information regarding this person and his/her contact info. Third, you can contact the USMA admissions office. I suggest doing this as a last resort because -- with >10,000 applications per year -- they are really busy and you're better off using the other sources first.

1) Know what you're getting into. Read some books about it. Visit West Point. National Geographic filmed an excellent documentary many years ago called "Surviving West Point". Talk to others.

2) Start to distinguish yourself. Take the initiative. Get everything done as early as possible. Start getting in contact with your Field Force Reps and Admissions Officers. Make yourself known.

Just my two cents.

Okay, for nominations part, I read a part about Secratary of Army. I am a current JROTC cadet attending and my school was noted with the honor unit with distinction. So if i had my Senior Army Instructor to do my recommendations, would that work??

You need a recommendation from an English teacher, a math teacher, and a Science teacher with no way around it. They told us at SLS that other recommendations would carry no weight as to your admissions decision.

I talked to my Field Admissions Officer and, although I have recommendations for my English, math, and Science high school teachers finished, I am entering college pretty son, so now they are asking for recommendations from my college English and Science teachers as well, which I thought was odd because I thought three was enough.

okay. wait. for the science teacher, would my biology teacher work?

Sorry to interrupt, but since school is currently closed over the summer break, wouldn't it be logical to get my HS Transcript and Teacher recommendations when it opens in September seeming that might be a bit late, or are there other options available?

And would it be to my disadvantage if I opened a file a bit later once I've collected necessary materials or would it be better to just open one right now and slowly progress through it over the months?

cdh50193, the guidance department of my kids' high school is open during the summer. Not all of the guidance counselors are there (they take turns) but one is able to request a transcript.

The WP teacher recommendations are done by email. Could you not contact your teachers by email, note, or telephone and ask permission to use them as a recommendation? All you do is give their name to WP and they send out the email.

1. every school is different. call your school and see if official transcripts can be sent out. some high school's don't even have them ready until mid-late summer.

2. Yes! Opening your file later is a disadvantage and it's better to open it NOW! There is no advantage to waiting. Get it open and complete the items when you can.

I went to my school 2 weeks ago and had my guidance counselor send in everything by fax and phone calls. As Just A Mom had stated, every school is different so I would go up and ask if they could call your regional admissions officer.
