Any last minute tips?

He is coming to my work to interview me, and I am basically bringing everything I brought to my NROTC interview plus some other stuff, but is there anything in particular I should bring.

What questions should I look out for.

B&G

Your B&G officer isn't there to trip you up with questions. They just want to know if this is what you want and to see you know what your getting yourself into. Just try and relax all you'll do fine. Just try and remember that their your B&G officer and their to help you. Just relax, you'll do fine. Good luck. Oh don't forget to breath.

If you've not already done so, read my stickies above. There is one that deals quite extensively with BGO interviews, including the questions you should expect.

usna1985,

Where are your stickies above relative to what to expect in the BGO interview?
Thanks.

They would be Role of the Blue & Gold Officer and Role of the BGO Part II. I have just added new material.

Haha, this is 90% true for my BGO. He was great, and it was his first time doing an interview,, but he asked/said two things that completely made me just trip over my words and screw my self.

1. "What is the difference between responsibility and accountability?" I know, but I couldn't put it into words.

2. "So you want to go subs, but you are looking into aerospace engineering?" I started to say that I know that they are unrelated, but they are both things I am fascinated with an would like to expand my knowledge in, but he stopped me midway and told me that Aerospace Engineering is actually a favorite of submariners and is a popular field of study for subs, and how subs are "planes in the water"

Other than that, I think it went very well.

Honestly, be yourself. My son said that he knew that the BGO had BS detector and the more they talked, the more DS decided that this guy was the real deal and he would put it all out there. Just be who you are. You really can't prepare for this type of interview. Just know that your true self is the one that will eventually show yourself when the going gets rough at the Academy.

What a dumb question, in my opinion. A question like that has all the earmarks of being "tricky" and making the interviewee uncomfortable which should NOT be the objective of the interview. And it DID make you uncomfortable - didn't it?

Somebody is probably going to say, "Maybe the BGO wanted to see the candidate operate under a little pressure." Well ... maybe. But I seriously do not think such an interview is the time and place for things like that.

It would be better to simply ask, "What does being responsible mean to you?" - then, after getting an answer to a straightforward question, you could follow it up by asking "What does being accountable mean to you? Are they different?" Breaking it down in parts, instead of trying to compare two almost-synonymous words is much better and doesn't make it seem like a trick question.

I'm curious - can the BGO's read the candidates personal statement? Do they have access to that?

No, BGOs don't have access to the candidate's personal statement. Some candidates bring it. Some BGOs may ask them to bring it (I don't).

If you check my sticky above, you'll see what BGOs can see (no, I didn't specifically mention personal statements). It's not much.
