I know, It is hard to believe that the 7-week Beast is almost over. R-day felt like yesterday. I have been checking whether, pictures, discussions daily ever since.

By now, I figure the excitement of being at west point is probably gone down, the uniforms are not brand spanking new anymore. In place of the initial excitements, I hope it's about time the NC adapted to the schedules and life at their new "home"? For those who still are not adapted, will they get depressed and become a source/reason to separate? I read that 50 kids left after Beast 1. Will this number go up significantly after Beast 2? Certainly don't hope so. There were only like 43 NC quited Beast in class 2013.

Anyone who has gone through Beast, what was on your mind at this stage?

A lot has been said about the "darker" side of Beast (e.g., passing the PT final, creeping through the woods for live fire exercises, the horrors of the gas chamber, etc.). There is a recently posted video on You-Tube regarding the Patton's Challenge that does present a different side. . .The side of developing teamwork, commaraderie, and a bit of hi-jinks at the end. Even you "old timers" will be amused by the ne'er to be equaled rendition of "Slum and Gravy" performed as a chorus line.

Congrats to your kids for enduring, and congrats to you parents for enduring.

Yes, some will quit during the academic year. But most will find it much nicer than Beast. The rigors of academia will strike each kid differently. We had some really odd dropouts. In the end, though, your kids have surpassed the first big hurdle. Be sure to celebrate it with them!

BG Rapp went through the gas chamber with E Company and there's video!

I am struck by a look of maturity in their faces that was not there in the pictures from R-Day.

Final Week of Beast...

Thanks for the YouTube. This young men and women truly embody Duty, Honor, Country. They truly have perseverance.

God Bless them all,

The official and quasi-official sources have discredited rumors of numbers of 50 and 100 Beast dropouts; I haven't seen any accurate numbers put forward in their stead. I'm curious myself, but I don't think we'll really know until A-Day.

That first week was incredibly tough. I wonder if that's when most of them left?

In reality it doesn't matter, and there seems to be a bit of a macabre fascination with finding out who failed and who quit. I would submit that such information will eventually come out, but that this is a time when positivity is the name of the game. Beast isn't the end. Many hurdles lie ahead, and I can tell you with certainty that at least one parent on here will face the sadness and shock of their child unexpectedly leaving.

My humble opinion is to focus on cheering our kids on (your kids, as I have none). Let's not focus on who didn't finish the race.

Very Cool!
Patton's Challenge is new then. They didn't do that last year.
Must be a BG Rapp addition to the Beast experience.

Maximus - did you see your NC in this 'youtube' video?

I think we saw his back...lol
We did see him in the video's and pictures of the Gas Chamber-House of Tears, great video, he's when they change songs to the CCR song, they yell his name...lol

Seems to me that your DS attracts the WP cameras! :shake::shake:
DH says that our DS turns into a ghost whenever pictures are being taken. It is a rare event to see him in any picture. :frown:

Compare to that of the past years, has this year's Beast been particularly hard (due to the hot weather)? Also, in general William Rapp's FB, he said 40% of the Class 2014 did not pass the Army Physical Fitness Test initially (after R-day). That % seems quite high.

I rarely see my son in any pictures. He hides from the camera really well. Maybe he has potential for the secret service. :shake::shake:

That is not high. The vast majority have no idea how to take an APFT. They're used to just doing pushups without being graded on technique. Combine that with the stress of a new environment and many kids tube it.

I remember two years ago it was considered a big deal if you passed the practice APFT at the beginning of beast. Nearly everyone passes at the end, but not all. Good luck to everyone's new cadets!! They're almost plebes!!

BG Rapp just advised on Facebook that 90.2% of the first cycle to take APFT passed. When one considers that the jailhouse flu is making the rounds, and there are more than a few "Walking wounded" at the end of beast, (foot/knee/ankle injuries are going to kill the run scoring), this is a good number. I can't imagine a NC not passing after 6 weeks of pt IF the wheels and lungs are working. I presume that a very very large percent of the 9.8% NC's who did not pass were affected by wheel issues. I am willing to bet a cup of espresso that the majority who didn't pass failed the 2 mi run, and that most of them were recovering from problems with a lower extremity.

The flaw with that theory is that those who are suffering from lower extememity injuries are given a "profile" and do not take the record APFT. There are as many reasons for not passing an APFT as there are folks who don't pass. Those who fail will be given 90 days to remediate and retake the test. There may well be some folks who were planning to take a pass over Labor Day who are now quite unhappy...
