Hi Everyone,

It's been a while...can't believe we made it through basic.
I had a question regarding webcams and skype: are they allowed & do they work? I'd like to buy one on doolie day out tomorrow, but want to know if it will be worth the expense.

Thank you!

You can download skype, and I think webcams work, but don't get caught; at least that's the general "rule" for our squad.

I'm not sure about the current comm squad rules, but it used to be banned.

...just because they don't block it doesn't mean they don't know about it.

as someone very familiar with IT and networks.

The way USAFA has their network configured. If something is banned, you would be very smart not to use it.

Everything that travels acrossed a network leaves a trail. Everything at USAFA runs through a proxy server. would take a network admin all of about 30 seconds to look at the log files and tell which IP address used skype or any other kind of "banned" protocol.

Remember, it's not what you do when people are watching that will define you. It is what you do when they are not watching.

last i heard it was banned, but i know many people who used it. just like AIM before Facebook chat came about...

so bottom line: use at your own risk

I know that commercial music downloads, iPods, stereos etc are banned the first year. Is a 4 degree allowed to have and play a musical instrument such as an acoustic guitar or an electronic keyboard w/ headsets? May music composition software be installed and used on a personal computer to create original MIDI music files?

Thanks for all the info, guys. As for the guitar: my roommates gonna have one because he's in choir...but I'm not sure if EVERY 4dig is allowed one after parents' weekend

Rules change all the time, and each squadron can set their own. But I've never seen them deny you having a musical instrument. My son, when he was a C4C, had his guitar in the dorm. As always, my advice (Once you've become a cadet), look to your squadron for the answers. These forums can offer a lot of great advice and wisdom, but you're on "THE INSIDE" now. You can find a much more accurate answer to most of your questions than we can. Again, social type rules constantly change. Squadron to Squadron and Class to Class. You need to ask these questions to your squadron. But in the past, you could have musical instruments. Even C4C's could. mike....
