DS scores first attempt: Basketball throw 72 feet 2 inches, Pullups 11, Shuttle 8.96 seconds, Crunches 53, Pushups 29, Mile run 8:35

Obviously room for improvement in various categories. Should he submit now and try to improve, or wait until results have improved then submit improved results?

I would imagine that it would be more of a hassle trying to submit scores twice. Get the push-ups and mile improved for sure, work on pull-ups and sit-ups if possible.

Work on the mile run, and try and pull it down at least to 7:30. Running every morning and every night at a consistent pace really helps. He can do it! As far as pushups go, he really needs to get that up. I'm a Young Marine, a program for kids 8-18, .... JROTC, boy scouts type of thing, and we PT a lot. I'm assuming the Naval Academy will work them even harder as adults. Pushups is a must. Try and bring them up to the 45 range.

how does he perform 11 pull-ups and only 29 push ups?

11 pull ups is a good amount, which suggest good upper body/back muscles.

then only 29 pushups....?

I recommend waiting to submit. USNA keys in on mile and pushups (and crunches). Being honest (and blunt), those scores for a male aren't going to be impressive. I've posted "average" CFA scores (published by USNA) from a few years ago in a sticky above. He has until March 1 to submit the CFA so no rush.

I strongly recommend your son work with a coach or trainer to design a workout program that focuses on those areas. With dedicated effort, he should be able to make significant progress in 2-3 months.

Some will tell you that your son should keep taking and submitting the test b/c USNA likes to see perseverance and improvement. Not really. They want to see great scores.

My personal view (and it's only that -- NOT USNA position) is that your son should wait to submit until he can run a mile in 7:00 or less and do 45-50 pushups. That's still below average but in the ballpark. THEN he can continue to improve and submit even better scores.

i found that surprising too- my personal abilities- 9 pull-ups- got to work on it!, 67 push-ups

with pushups

try
googling 100pushups on google

follow that routine

for running

run at least 3 times a week from 1-2 miles

i like doing 2 miles one day to build endurance and 1 mile the other for speed

Look into a general fitness program, either personal trainers or something like crossfit or stew smith.
